Self-study Strategies for Learning English

Divide up your time between the following strategies.

1. Listen, don't think, no subtitles Set aside some time that is for Listening Only. 10 minutes or more a day would be best, but at least some time once a week. Don't try to understand, just listen for the sounds of English. If you're thinking then your NOT listening. Listen to news or other English on the internet. Listen to TV channels like Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, National Geographic, Star World, CNN, BBC. Watch other DVDs/movies of interest to you. DO NOT read the Chinese subtitles when watching live TV. That is NOT listening. Remember, you are listening for the sound of English. You don't need to understand, therefore, you do NOT need to read the subtitles.
