Science On Stage: Leaving Certificate Physics Examination Queries

The Science on Stage team is compiling demonstrations from a recent festival into a booklet for teachers. They hope to distribute the booklet in the next school year as a resource for teachers. One demonstration previewed involves connecting a wire to a battery and brushing the other end of the wire against a magnet, causing the wire to move due to the interaction between the current and the magnetic field. The booklet aims to showcase simple experiments like this one that teachers can replicate in their classrooms.

Science on Stage
The Science on Stage (SOS) team are busy at the moment writing up demonstrations they compiled at the Geneva SOS festival. It is hoped that a booklet similar to the successful Physics on Stage booklets will be produced during the coming months and distributed to teachers in the next school year.

A taste from the work in hand is the Apparatus: 1.5 V cell, screw, strong neodymium magnet, piece of wire. Procedure: Set up the apparatus as shown. Connect one end of the wire to the positive terminal of the cell and complete the circuit by brushing the other end against the magnet. Observe what happens. Principle: a current carrying wire in a magnetic field experiences a force. Note: Invert the magnet and repeat.
