Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Index Notation Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able to simplify the products of indices Most students should be able to simplify the products and quotients of indices Some students should be able to simplify combinations of indices using products and quotients Keywords: Power, Base, Integer, Coefficient Product, Quotient
Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students recap learning of the rules of indices with the multiplication and division rules. It is important that students not only know to add the powers for multiplication but are able to describe why the powers are added for products and why they are subtracted for quotients. Students should be able to generalise and . Students are often confused with negative powers. Development To extend the learning from the starter multiples of the base are now given. Encourage students to rearrange the expressions so they are able to collect the powers and the coefficients. For example, . This could be consolidated through the application of BODMAS. Once this is understood the class should be able to use their powers of intuition to simplify similar problems involving divisions. Assess Q3 on the second slide onwards through having the students present their workings on mini-whiteboards one question at a time. Students should be able to work through the problems posed on the third slide independently. The extension questions ask students to generalise the expressions using unknowns to ensure a thorough understanding. Plenary The plenary is intended to link the concept of simplifying indices to solve contextualised problems involving geometry. It is important that students have sufficient time to work through the problems. Encourage the class to work through the problems in pairs for peer support. Use mini-whiteboards to assess progress. Differentiation
Resources: Mini-Whiteboards
More able: Students could attempt problems involving fractional and negative powers and coefficients to add another element of challenge to the concept. Less Able Using positive integer coefficients and powers will enable the students to focus on the intended learning objective rather than mental arithmetic.
