EDIT 202 Technology Tools for Teaching Lakeland College Lab #3 Webquest 1. Research Skills.

s. A WebQuest is an online teaching and learning technology that gives the students an opportunity to gain knowledge from completing a task or activity. This project-based approach is supported by a variety of theories, including constructivist philosophy, critical thinking, situated learning environments, cooperative learning, and engaged learning (Zhou, Ma, Liang, Yue, & Peng, 2011). According to an article from the Faculty of Education in Turkey, there are 6 main components to a WebQuest (Kurtulus, 2009). 1. Introduction to capture student interest 2. Description of the task(s) that learners will complete 3. The process, broken into steps that learners follow to accomplish the task(s) 4. Information sources needed to complete the task(s) 5. Evaluation that informs students of how their work will be graded (often in rubric form) 6. Conclusion There are two main types of WebQuests: Short-term and Long-term (Zhou, Ma, Liang, Yue, & Peng, 2011). Short-term WebQuests usually take up to three days to complete and focus on the student learning new knowledge. Long-term WebQuests take up more than three days to complete and focus on building knowledge on top of what the student already knows about the subject. The study in 2011 was performed to compare the use of WebQuests in the classroom to improve and stimulate critical thinking. The qualitative data shows that the integration of WebQuests is an effective approach to promote students critical thinking (Zhou, Ma, Liang, Yue, & Peng, 2011). There are many examples of WebQuests on WebQuest.Org. These resources help the educator to develop new WebQuests as well as get ideas from other educators. WebQuests are being used all over the world and have a positive outcome for students. http://www.webquest.hawaii.edu/ Focuses on deepening the students understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics http://webquest.sdsu.edu/necc98.htm Focuses on scaffolding the students (this means to use learning materials to aid in a higher understanding of material) by using WebQuests. http://webquest.sdsu.edu/designsteps/index.html Focuses on showing the educator how to properly design a WebQuest and all the necessary components that should be included for maximum learning opportunities.
