Automatic Number Plate Recognition

ANPR, or automatic number plate recognition, is a mass surveillance method that uses optical character recognition on images taken by cameras to read license plates on vehicles. It was invented in 1976 in the UK and the first arrest using the technology was in 1981. ANPR works by using OCR on images captured by cameras to read license plates. It has advantages like being maintenance-free with no moving parts and being configurable and low-cost. Potential disadvantages include poor image quality from factors like lighting, reflections and shadows. ANPR has applications in electronic toll collection, car park management, security, and monitoring journey times and vehicle theft prevention.
