ANPR, or automatic number plate recognition, is a mass surveillance method that uses optical character recognition on images taken by cameras to read license plates on vehicles. It was invented in 1976 in the UK and the first arrest using the technology was in 1981. ANPR works by using OCR on images captured by cameras to read license plates. It has advantages like being maintenance-free with no moving parts and being configurable and low-cost. TECHNOLOGY
It uses optical character recognition[OCR] on images taken by Cameras. Dutch vehicle registration plates switched to a different style in 2002one of the changes made was to the font ,introducing small gap in some letters.
