Physics Lab 1

This document summarizes a physics lab experiment to measure the length and width of a table. The student took 10 measurements each of the length and width. They calculated the mean, standard deviation, and standard error to determine the average lengths while accounting for random errors in measurement. They were able to successfully measure the length and width of the table and analyze the results using the relevant statistical equations.

Physics Lab 1: Measurement of Length

Louis Mpungu PHYS.205L Maajida L.C. Murdock 09/08/12

THEORY: Due to random errors, it is assumed that there is an uncertainty in the measurement of the length and width of the table. If what is said is to be true, than the mean or average of a series of repeated measurements should and will represent the plausible value for the length and width. In this case and will stand for the mean of the measurements. ( ) ( )

We also use standard deviation to get an even more precise answer by using the individual measurements.

We also are able to use the equations called the Standard error equation

We are also responsible for solving for area

EQUIPTMENT LIST: 2-meter stick Laboratory table

PROCEDURE: 1. Place the 2-meter stick along the length of the table near the middle of the width and parallel to one edge of the length. 2. (let X stand for the length ) read the scale on the meter stick and record it in your chart, you record the first number which is closest to Zero in your and the second number in your 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 nine more times for a total of 10 measurements. Make the measurements at 10 different places along with the width of the table. 4. Once again perform steps one through three for 10 measurements of the width of the table, store this data in your and on your chart.

Conclusion/ Discussion:

Based on the data collected, we as a group were able to see the minor errors (random errors) it wasnt much but you can see that the measurements for the length were mostly the same but when it came to the width it was slightly off as you can see in the chart. We were able to use the equations listed above to help us successfully achieve our goal.
