FPGA Training: by Ushasri Merugu 21 Dec 2012

FPGAs have advantages over ASICs for many applications including faster time-to-market without manufacturing steps, lower costs due to software handling routing and placement, and simpler design cycles without non-recurring expenses or risks of re-spins. However, ASICs can provide full custom capability, lower unit costs for very high volume designs due to being manufactured to specifications, and smaller form factors. The document compares advantages of FPGA versus ASIC designs.

FPGA vs. ASIC Design Advantages

FPGA Design Advantage Faster time-to-market Benefit No layout, masks or other manufacturing steps are needed Costs typically associated with an ASIC design Due to software that handles much of the routing, placement, and timing

No upfront non-recurring expenses (NRE) Simpler design cycle

More predictable project cycle Due to elimination of potential re-spins, wafer capacities, etc. Field reprogramability A new bitstream can be uploaded remotely

FPGA vs. ASIC Design Advantages

ASIC Design

Advantage Full custom capability Lower unit costs

Benefit For design since device is manufactured to design specs For very high volume designs

Smaller form factor

Since device is manufactured to design specs
