The institute is starting two years (four semesters) full time M.Sc. program in
MATHEMATICS AND SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING from July 2008.
About the Institute

Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad was formerly Motilal
Nehru Regional Engineering College, Allahabad. It is an institute with total
commitment to quality and excellence in academic pursuits and is among one of
the leading institutes in INDIA which was established in year 1961 as a joint
enterprise of Govt. of India and Govt. of U.P. in accordance with the scheme of
establishment of REC. However with effect from June 26th of 2002 the college
became deemed university and is now known as Motilal Nehru National Institute
of Technology.
The students are extensively exposed to cross-cultural environment as
candidates from various other countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh,
Bhutan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Palestine and Thailand also join
MNNIT for various undergraduate and post-graduate programs.
MNNIT is fully residential institution with seven hostels for boys and two for girls.
One hostel is exclusively for post graduate students.
About the Department
The Department of Mathematics is going to start a postgraduate program, M.Sc.
in MATHEMATICS AND SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING catering for students of
mainly Science background. The Department supports a policy of active
research and insists on the high standard of academic achievement. At present,
the faculty of the Department is working in the area of Algebra, Computational
Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Geometry & Topology, Relativity, Cryptography,
Special functions, Fuzzy Theory, Operation Research, and Differential
Equations etc.
The Department runs Ph.D. program in Mathematics and holds regular seminars
that ensure that its members stay abreast of latest developments. Institute also
supports an active program of long term and short term visits by distinguished
international academics.
The Department has all the facilities of a well established and progressive
teaching and research, including an extensive computer network through which
electronic journals can be accessed in the institution. In the institute a wide
variety of software packages is available including Mathematica and Matlab,
Singular, COCOCA. Department is committed to providing the students
excellent facilities to work.
About the Programme :
Full time M.Sc. in Mathematics & Scientific Computing will be of four
semester program. This two year programme offers an exciting opportunity to
students who are interested in Mathematics and who wish to pursue career in
industry, research and teaching. This Programme with a broad based curriculum
has the following main attractive features:
The programme offers computer oriented courses and extensive
laboratory training in Mathematics. As part of an effort to learn new
mathematical techniques that can be used to address regional industrial
problems. Mathematica, Matlab and Mapple will be used as the main tools to
deal with most of the computational subject matter of the M. Sc. courses being
offered. These courses will include Mathematical Analysis, Statistics, Algebra,
Optimization, Coding Theory, Mathematical Modeling and Simulation,
Mathematical Statistics, Data Structure and Programming Languages, Automata
Theory and Mechanics.
In the third and fourth semester each student will take up a project under
the guidance of a faculty member. In the Project, a student explores a specific
topic outside the course programme, surveys the available literature on the topic
and submits a critical review in the form of a report which may also include
original theoretical results and/or results of experimental work. This process
provides an initiation into mathematical research and also equips the student
with the skills of presentation of research/technical literature.
Eligibility Conditions:
A candidate having three years B. Sc. Degree with minimum 60% marks
(or equivalent) with Mathematics as one of the main subject. The candidates
appearing in their final year of B. Sc degree may apply.
In take (Seats) : No. of students to be admitted 15.
RESERVATION: Reservation in admission is allowed as per the Central
Government norms.
Admission Procedure: Admission shall be on the basis of written test
(objective / short answer) of B.Sc. level.
Duration of test: Two hours.
Syllabus for written test: Abstract Algebra, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis,
Complex Analysis, Calculus, Vector Analysis, Analytical Geometry, Differential
Equations, Numerical Analysis, Mechanics, Fundamental knowledge of
computers.

a teacher in the department. This project will be of two semesters for III and IV.
