Analysing electrical energy and power. ( EXERCISES )

1. A current of 5.0 A flows through an electric heater when is connected to the 240 V mains supply. How much heat is released after 2 minutes ? ( A = 144 000 J ) 2. An electric kettle is rated 240 V 1500 W. Calculate the resistance of its heating element and the current at the normal usage. ( A = 38.4 , 6.25 A ) 3. Two resistors 5 and 10 are connected in parallel to a 9 V supply. Calculate : (a) the ratio of the power dissipated in the 5 resistor to the 10 resistor. (b) the output power of the supply. 4. How much electrical energy in joules does a 60 W lamp consume in : (a) 1 minute ? (b) 1 hour ?

( A =2:1 ) ( A = 24.3 W )

( A= 3600 J ) ( A = 216 kJ )

5. What is the maximum power in kilowatts of an appliance that is connected safely to a 13 A 240 V mains socket ? ( 3120 W ) 6. A bulb is labeled 12 V 36 W. (a) Calculate the current flow and the resistance of the bulb when its connected to a 12 V supply. (b) The bulb is the connected to a 6 V supply. (i) what will happen to the bulb ? (ii) calculate the current that flows through the bulb. ( A = 1.5 A ) 7. An electric lamp uses energy at the rate 60 W on a 12 V supply. How much charge passes through the lamp in 1 minute ? ( A = 300 C ) 8. A house supplied by a 240 V power supply. There are six lamps connected in parallel, each rated as 240 V 40 W. What is the current supplied by the power supply ? ( A = 1.0 A ) 9. An electric heater is connected to a 24 V power supply. 18 000 J of energy is used by the electric heater after it is switched on for 1 minute. What is the resistance of the electric heater ? (A=1.92 ) 10. An electric kettle has a power 2000 W and only need 10 minutes 29 seconds to boil up the water. What its efficiency if it has to boil up the 3.6 kg water from 25 C ? ( A = 90.1% ) 11. A steam iron is connected to a 240 V mains. The current flows through it is 3 A. (a) How much power is consumed ? ( A = 720 W ) (b) How much energy has been produced in 60 minutes ? ( A = 2.592 x 106 J ) (c) If the cost of 1 kWh is RM 0.218, how much will it cost to use it for an hour per day for 30 days. ( A = RM 4.71 )
