Essay Topic: UPSC (IAS)

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India's central agency authorized to conduct the Civil Services Examination. The Indian Administrative Service (abbreviated as IAS) is the administrative civil service of the Government of India. The Administrative Service is one of the three All India Services. For the Indian Administrative Service a candidate must be a citizen of India with a valid degree from a recognized institute. His or her age should be within 21 years to 30 years as on 1st August of the year of Examination. The upper age limit is relaxable as per govt. of India rules. The UPSC (IAS) examination has three stages: 1. CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) 2. Civil Services Mains 3. Interview

The CSAT have two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each and of two hours duration each. All questions are of objective type. The first paper tests the General Awareness while the second paper tests reasoning skills/analytical ability/numerical aptitude/ English language Comprehension skills. Those who qualify CSAT have to appear for the Civil Services Mains examination. The format of the main examination is as shown below: Maximum Marks

There are 23 optional subjects to choose from with the exception of certain paper combinations. Those who qualify the Mains examination are called for the interview. The interview carries 300 marks. Total marks obtained by the candidate in the Main Examination as well as interview would determine his/her final ranking.
