Lab 1 Write Up 8-24-12

1) This lab experiment aims to analyze how the moisture level of an environment affects the behavior of Rolli Polly bugs. The null hypothesis is that the moisture level will not impact their behavior. It is predicted that if the bugs show no preference, their behavior will not change between the chambers. 2) The experiment involves placing 5 Rolli Polly bugs each in the dry and wet chambers of a petri dish. Their movements are observed and recorded every minute for 10 minutes. 3) The control group is the dry paper towel chamber, which is expected to remain unchanged. The results and observations are analyzed to determine if one chamber is favored over the other and if this surprises the researchers. Modifications to make

LAB 1: Effect of the Environment on Animal Behavior

Objectives: In this lab you will analyze the effect a wet environment has on Rolli Polly bugs versus
a dry environment.

Null Hypothesis: The moisture of an environment will not effect the behavior of Rolli Polly bugs?
Prediction: If the Rolli Polly bugs show no preference toward the moist environment, then there
would be no change in behavior in the respective chambers.

Materials:

1. A petri dish with two chambers

2. Paper towels
3. Water
4. 10 Rolli Polly Bugs

Procedure:

1. Gather all noted materials.

2. Place petri dish in desired workspace. Place a dry paper towel in one chamber of the petri dish and
wet paper towel in the other chamber.
3. Place 5 Rolli Polly bugs in each of the two chambers.
4. Observe their moments every minute for ten minutes. Record your observations on chart below.
