Pass Ip Codes

IP codes classify protection levels for mechanical and electrical enclosures against solid objects, dust, contact, and water ingress. The first digit refers to solid object protection, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 6 (dust tight protection). The second digit refers to water ingress protection, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 8 (submerged beyond 1m). For example, an IP22 rating protects against finger insertion and exposure to vertically dripping water. IP codes provide a standardized rating system for enclosure protection levels.

Ingress Protection

IP Codes
As defined in international standard IEC 60529, IP Codes classify and rate the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in mechanical casings and with electrical enclosures. The digits indicate conformity with the conditions summarized in the tables below. Where there is no protection rating with regard to one of the criteria, the digit is replaced with the letter X.

First Number: Solid particle protection (IP*X)

No protection against contact and ingress of objects.

Second Number: Liquid ingress protection (IPX*)

No protection from the ingress of water.

Protection from objects greater than 50mm, such as any large surface of the body (e.g. the back of a hand). Protection from objects greater than 12.5mm, such as fingers or similar objects. Protection from objects greater than 2.5mm, such as tools, thick wires, etc. Protection from objects greater than 1mm, such as most wires, screws, etc. Protection from ingress of dust in a sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of equipment. Dust tight: complete protection from the ingress of dust.

Dripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no harmful effect. Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at an angle of up to 15 from its normal position. Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60 from the vertical shall have no harmful effect. Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect. Water projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects. Water projected in powerful jets (12.5mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects. Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in up to 1m of water. The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water at a depth specified by the manufacturer (beyond 1m).

For example, an electrical socket rated IP22 is protected against insertion of fingers and will not be damaged or become unsafe during a specified test in which it is exposed to vertically or nearly vertically dripping water, IP22 or IP2X are typical minimum requirements for the design of electrical accessories for indoor use.
