CONES

WHAT IS A CONE?
A

Cone is an ndimensional geometric shape that tapers smoothly from a base usually flat and circular to a point called the apex or vertex.

THE 2 TYPES OF CONE

Right

circular, where right means that, the axis passes through the center of the base at right angle to its plane. It is similar to a regular pyramid except that its base is a circle. Oblique cones, in which the axis does not pass perpendicularly through the center of the base.

Have

you experienced attending a childrens Birthday party?

Did

you wear a Birthday party hat? Did it fit your head?

Problem 1. Rey together with his younger brother, Michael, was assigned to make two Birthday party hats. They already made two, but they have no wrapper yet. What is the amount of wrapper needed to cover the two party hats?

What should they do?

Find the volume and the surface area of hat.

WHAT IS THE FORMULA?

SA= r + rs = r(r + s) r= radius of the base s= slant height The volume of a circular cone is one-third the product of its altitude and the area of its base. V= 1/3Bh

The

larger the volume of the hat, the wider the wrapper needed.

Have

you tasted a black ice cream? What about its cone?

Problem 2.

Mrs. Tan bought two galloons of colorful ice cream for the Birthday Party that night. She bought a large size ice cream cone. She had also a large ice cream scoop. What is the amount of ice cream that could fit in the ice cream cone?

The Government planned to have traffic cones in all roads and highways to avoid car accidents. They had already bought one traffic cone as a model. Because of money shortage, they need to make their own traffic cone. What should they do in order to have the same traffic cones as that of the model?

Find the volume and the surface area of the traffic cone.

The

Government should use the solved volume and surface area of the traffic cone model in order to make the same traffic cones.

Exercise 1. Find the volume and surface area of the cone whose diameter is 6cm, the altitude is 10cm and whose slant height is 13cm.

The

larger the volume of a cone, the larger it becomes.
