Exploring the concept of measurement with children

The children were asked, Whats measuring all about? Their responses: How much size you have, how much grams Callum Zara talked about measuring a baby and a bigger child and used her hands to show how big. A few children mentioned grams Joshua said you put meat or potatoes or pineapple or food on and it tells the shopkeeper about what number it is and what money you have to give how big it is. Callum said, that thing is called a temperature and has numbers on it, grams, how big it is. Zara said, its about ifyou wanted 2 chairs, you would have to go to the counter and ask how much it costs, you can put it back if you dont want it. Ellie said, you can measure a person, then you read how tall they are some can be small, some can be bit. Joshua A. talked about weighing. Joshua said, its measuring people to see what size they are. How do we measure? (teacher) Measuring tape and something you stand on (you cant hold onto anything) and tells what size you are. Joshua Callum talked about a big poster he has a calendar, it tells when your birthday is Kale said his friend Georgia came over and they measured everybody, you are a bit smaller when sitting down, then I measured myself and I was a bit more taller because I was standing up. Joshua said his grandpa measured me and my baby brother.

Teacher reflections: I was interested that the children did not use the word scales and only a few talked about weighing. They talked about the beeping sound at the shop which I think is the scanner at the checkout. Discussion continued two days later. I reminded the children about our previous discussion on measuring and asked if anyone had any more ideas about the topic. I asked, Do you know about any measuring that happens in your house? Measuring wood, to see what size it is. Caelan To make sure its the right size. Sam What do you use to measure wood? (Teacher) Tape measure Sam What about measuring a house, you measure the walls. What would you measure the walls with? (Teacher) With masking tape. Francesca Dads got 2 tape measures. Ive seen him measure wood. Caelen Mum measured screws to fix grandmas hose on the wall. Joshua K. Measuring if you need paper. You just measure with a measuring tape. If you want straight linesmake a line with a pencil and then cut where the line is. Jordan S. How you get a straight line ? (Teacher) Jordan said you just draw it. I cant draw a straight line. Do you need a tool? (Teacher) Yes, a measuring thing. Jordan S. One of those long things with numbers on. Callum Does anyone know the name of that thing? (Teacher) After thinking for a few minutes, Callum said, A ruler!

Measurement and Mathematics

Reflections: Some children have ideas about measuring length. Several children did not contribute and did not offer any ideas even when I asked about measuring in the kitchen. What next: We have already discussed asking the children to bring a measuring tool from home and wrapping it up so we can guess what it is. Children will be encouraged to ask questions about the attributes of the object to help them guess what it is. We would also like parents to come in and talk about how they might use measuring in their work. I would also like to take small groups to local shops to investigate what they measure and how. Our local shops include a supermarket, butcher, bakery, hairdresser, Post Office, and mechanic and tyre service centre. We could take small groups to different shops and then get them to report back to the big group. We will remember to take clipboards so children can draw what they see.

Tommys dad brought in his measuring tools he uses in the building trade.

Zac and Avas mum, Tania brought in the measuring tools she uses when designing and making clothes. Then the next week she brought in her sewing machine and measured material to make new covers for our cushions!

Eloise's mum, Julie brought in her scale ruler and town plans to show children the measuring tools a town planner uses.

Guessing Game for measuring tool

Teacher: This is a measuring tool . We use it to measure something. Sienna: Does it have numbers on it? Teacher: Yes Isabella: Is it made of glass? Teacher:Yes half of it is Milly : Is it red? Teacher: a bit Henry : Does it have green bits? Teacher: No Sienna: Does it have metal? Teacher:This tool is used to measure when it is hot or cold. What could it be? Daniel: feet Oscar: I have seen it at Childcare hanging up. It measures the day whether it is hot or cold. Thats right it is a thermometer and it is used to measure temperature.

The Measurement Room.

With a small group of children we discussed how we could set up a measuring room what could we put in the room and what were the measuring tools that they would like to use. Fergus: we need measuring tapes. Luca: we cant have measuring tapes we can cut ourselves. Maybe we can have the bendy ones. Zara: we could get something with numbers on it so we could measure ourselves. Phoebe: we could have measuring spoons. Ava: and measuring cups. Luca: what about those things with the bubbles in it to go straight and if you put it one way it goes up and when you put it another way it goes flat. Teacher: How could we set it up? Zara: we could put the measuring things on the benches. Ava: we could measure water Fergus: liquid

Teacher: What about measuring weight?

Fergus: food against food Phoebe: scales Fergus: the one that is up is light and the one that is down is heavy Zara: look at it if it is big it is heavy Luca: we could measure using a bone .( Using body language pointed to his arm).

Welcome to the shops at Kensington Gardens Preschool

Educator's reflection: Following on from our trips to the shops and an inquiry into the measuring tools that local businesses use on a daily basis we have set up a series of shops inside and outside.

At the end of the term (Week 11) we invited parents to come to our end of session group time where children shared their learning about measurement and parents were able to watch photo stories of our visits to the shops. At our end of term family celebration night we displayed the childrens clay work, paintings, collage and wood work and encouraged families to read our walls to share in the childrens learning journey about measurement.
