Ahmedabad was originally a small fortified city built in 1412 near the Sabarmati River in Gujarat, India. Ahmed Shah expanded the city and had the Jama Masjid mosque built. In 1487, Mahmud Begada further expanded the fortified walls to protect the city, which was planned around main roads branching from the center and contained 12 gates and over 6000 defenses. Nearby suburbs also developed as amirs and officials settled near but not too close to the royal capital.

Introduction

Ahmedabad was built in an open and spacious plain in the immediate vicinity of Ashaval to the east of Sabaramati. At that time the city comprised a small area now known as Bhadra Fort. In 1412 Ahmed Shah built the Jama masjid to which other structures were added from time to time. The city was enclosed by a fort wall protect the city from outside invaders.
