About The Green Shanny Foundation: The Green Shanny Foundation was started in
2010 by family and friends of environmentalist Shannon Harps in an effort to carry on
her legacy. Shannon was a Sierra Club activist who organized events that were
instrumental in growing the Sierra Student Coalition Northwest and the Mayor's Climate
Protection Agreement in Seattle, Washington. She felt strongly about green energy and
worked tirelessly to find alternative transportation solutions that would minimize our
nation's carbon footprint specifically in Columbus, Ohio and Seattle, Washington. Not
only did Shannon work effectively to influence public policy regarding environmental
issues, but she also encouraged those of us close to her to make changes in our own
lives that demonstrated our commitment to a sustainable world community. She lived
her life according to the principles she espoused--a rare person who "walked her talk."
The Green Shanny Foundation aspires to continue Shannon's work by fund-raising and
distributing money that promotes the development of young environmental leaders,
facilitates programs that educate on the development of environmental sustainability,
and that support and/or advocate for green energy and alternative transportation.
About the Grants: It is our belief that we should EDUCATE todays youth on the
importance of environmental issues, INITIATE action to work toward a more sustainable
future and ADVOCATE on behalf of the environmental ideals that Shannon followed in
her life. The Green Shanny Foundation distributes funding that supports its mission in 3
main categories. Eligibility for each category of grant is listed below:
