How to apply to RU for degree-seeking students
Dates and deadlines
Residents of EU / EEA
The University has two annual intakes for home and EU/EEA students. Please note that not all programmes admit students during the spring term. The autumn term begins in the middle of August, and the spring term begins in January.
Studies starting in the autumn semester
- Application opens: February 5th
- Application deadline: April 30th
Studies starting in the spring semester
- Application opens: October 15th
- Application deadline: December 5th

Non-EU/ EEA students are only admitted in the autumn semester each year. The autumn term begins in the middle of August.

Application Guide
Before you apply, are you qualified?
Follow the guidelines and complete the online application form before the deadline.
Students who wish to enrol at Reykjavik University need to apply online using our application website. In many cases, applicants are required to send additional information. We encourage you to study the page for your desired programme, where you will find the information you need about admission requirements and documents needed to complete your application. Below, you can find information about applying to RU through our website.
Register and log in
- New users need to register by creating a username and password.
- Those who have registered can log in to the application system.
Applicant information
- Start by filling in your personal information under “Applicant.”
Required information and documents
- All accompanying information for your application needs to be submitted in this section. Read through your department's website for detailed information on admission requirements. You will find the information for your chosen programme under the tab labelled “Admissions”.
- Reykjavik University initially accepts scanned documents for admission assessment, which can be uploaded to the application form, but original copies must be submitted to receive an unconditional offer. You do not need to supply original transcripts until specifically requested.
Application
- To create an application, click on “Applications” and then the green “Apply” button.
- In the dialogue box that appears, you must first select the “department” and then the “Major” you wish to apply for. Other fields are optional.
- Please note that incomplete applications will not be assessed. Please make sure that all accompanying information and documents are in the system before submitting your application.
Saving your application
You can save your application to work on later by clicking on the “Save for later” button. This does not submit the application for review. Your application will then appear in the application list as “Draft”.
Submitting your application
When you are ready to submit your application, you need to open it (if you saved it before) and click on the “Apply now” button. This submits the application for review to the school, and the status of the application will now be “Submitted”.
Please note that you need to send certified paper copies of all relevant transcripts and other required documents to the school before your application will be formally reviewed. If your application is missing the required documentation, a notification will be sent to the email address you supplied during the registration process. In addition, these notifications will appear by each application shown in the application list and can be viewed by clicking on the "Open" link located by each application. Information on which documents are required can be found on each programme's web page under the tab "Information for students".
Waiting for an offer
Interviews
You may be invited for an interview before a decision is made. Students outside of Iceland are offered interviews via Skype or telephone.
Offers
If your application is successful, we will send you:
- An offer of a place in a programme
- An invoice for fee payments
- Information about visa requirements
Accepting an offer from Reykjavik University
Confirming your offer
To accept the offer from Reykjavik University, you must pay the registration fee before the stated deadline.
Methods of payment
Registration and tuition fees can only be paid by bank transfer to the Reykjavik University bank account.
When RU receives your payment, you will be issued an electronic confirmation of enrolment.
Apply for your visa
Please check our page for visa and residence permits to determine what, if any, permits or visas you will need to apply for. Ensure you begin the visa process early, as visa applications can take up to six months.
Join us
In the months preceding the start of your studies, we will send you your pre-arrival information and a list of accommodations available in Reykjavik. Our team at the International Office will assist you with any worries before you leave and provide information regarding moving to and living in Iceland.
You will receive your RU intranet login details two weeks before the term begins. This unique login will give you access to timetables, teaching materials, and course information for your studies at RU.

Other
- It is not possible to change a submitted application. However, updating the information under the “Applicant” menu is always possible regardless of your application(s) status.
- The school will not formally review applications in the “Draft” state. You need to submit your application so the status is “Submitted”. You can see the status of each application in the application list under “Applications”.
- To view an application, you can do so by clicking the “View” link for each application in the application list. If it is possible to change an application, you can click the “Modify” link.
- You can always withdraw or delete an application regardless of its state.
