Adrian Gonzalez

Freshman Adrian Gonzalez of the West Warwick High School baseball team was named Player of the Game on Monday following his walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning as part of a 5-4 win over East Greenwich.

WEST WARWICK - Adrian Gonzalez stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning of Monday’s Division II baseball game against East Greenwich at McCarthy Field and delivered the biggest hit of his young career.

A two-out single up the middle off of reliever Van Martin plated Nick Andruchow from second, as the Wizards rallied for five runs in their final at bat to stun the Avengers by a 5-4 count.

“Definitely a lot of nerves,” Gonzalez said of the high stakes moment. “Any type of situation like that, you have to put the pressure aside and lock in with the game. Once you get contact on the ball, it all goes.”

The Wizards, who improved to 6-1 on the year with the win, were held scoreless through the first six innings of play courtesy of a dominant performance on the mound by Avenger starter Keyan Zahedi. The right-handed sophomore, who wound up lasting 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and four strikeouts, entered the frame eyeing a complete game shutout before the Wizards’ bats began to heat up.
