The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday, April 22, finalized new parking rates for a lot at the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, which port officials say is needed to generate more revenue.

The council voted 12-0 to approve an ordinance for new parking rates, which will raise the fee from $20 to $22, followed by another increase to $24 by Jan. 1. In early April, the council preliminarily approved the ordinance, requiring a second vote.

Councilmembers Bob Blumenfield, Imelda Padilla and Monica Rodriguez were absent during Tuesday’s vote.

Parking for the first hour will remain free of charge, with each subsequent hour costing $2 until reaching the maximum daily rate.

Once the fee increases, according to port officials, the Harbor Department is expected to generate about $247,403 in the upcoming fiscal year. The department also estimated that it could generate $544,805 in FY 2026-27.

With the city of Los Angeles facing a nearly $1 billion deficit in the upcoming fiscal year, officials are exploring ways to generate revenue, with some options including higher taxes, fees and other costs. The city is also considering bond measures to create revenue streams for specific needs, such as maintenance and constructing fire stations.

The City Council recently approved a plan to increase trash collection fees, the first rate adjustment in 17 years. Elected officials are hoping to start those new fees by January, but further approvals are required before the rate change can be enacted.
