Your questions answered

What is the difference between an availability-zone region and a Local Zone?

Regions offer full-service availability zones in OVHcloud datacentres.
Local Zones extend this reach by deploying core cloud services in shared infrastructure—closer to end users—with sub-20ms latency.
You can leverage both for a mix of full-service capabilities and local responsiveness.

Do the prices of services in Local Zones differ?

No, our core Public Cloud services are priced the same across all Local Zones.

Are public IP addresses localized?

Yes, both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are localized.

How does connectivity work in a Local Zone?

Local Zones support both IPv4 and IPv6, offering public and private network options.
Due to the absence of vRack, Local Zones use local private networks for internal connectivity.

Are Local Zones like edge computing?

Yes, Local Zones are a key building block of edge computing.
They bring core cloud services closer to users and devices, enabling low-latency deployments with reduced infrastructure needs.

Can I automate deployments in Local Zones using Terraform or Ansible?

Yes, Local Zones offer the same level of automation as other OVHcloud environments.

Which products are currently available in Local Zones?

Compute (VMs), Block Storage, and Object Storage are currently supported—with more coming soon.

Is Managed Kubernetes available in Local Zones?

For now, OVHcloud’s Managed Kubernetes Service (MKS) is not directly available in Local Zones. However, you can deploy Kubernetes clusters within Local Zones using the Managed Rancher Service. This approach allows you to orchestrate Kubernetes clusters on Compute instances in Local Zones, which makes it a flexible alternative. For more details on how to set this up, read our blog post: How to Create a Kubernetes Cluster in a Local Zone through Managed Rancher Service.

Can I use vRack connectivity in Local Zones?

vRack, OVHcloud’s private networking solution, is not natively supported in Local Zones. You can still establish a secure private network between Local Zones and other OVHcloud regions with VPNs like Tailscale.Using this method, you can build a private network overlay, enabling secure communication across different environments. For step-by-step instructions, please refer to our guide: Using Tailscale to connect Local Zones to your private network.

Can I use custom OS images in Local Zones?

Local Zones do not currently support custom images, and there are no plans to include this feature in the future.
You can, however, select from various official OVHcloud images, including popular Linux distributions such as:

  • Ubuntu

  • Debian

  • CentOS

  • AlmaLinux

  • Rocky Linux

OVHcloud maintains and updates each image for fast and secure deployment across all Local Zones.
