KHASAB: The fifth phase of the Marine Mammal Survey, carried out by the Environment Authority (EA) in collaboration with several government agencies, began in Khasab, Musandam Governorate, on Monday.
The survey is part of the EA’s ongoing efforts aimed at protecting wildlife and preserving biodiversity in the Omani marine environment.
Lasting until April 24, the survey targets to collect accurate data on marine mammal species in the National Nature Park Reserve. It includes a field survey that utilises advanced technologies such as drones and GoPro cameras with the aim of developing an accurate map of species distribution in the reserve.
Eng Aida bint Khalaf al Jabriyah, head of the survey team, confirmed that the survey would enhance marine environmental management based on scientific data. The survey includes monitoring mammals using binoculars and specialised cameras and documenting sightings using the Spinner app.
The outcome of the previous phases showed a great diversity of species, with 38 sightings recorded, including the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin and spinner dolphin. Local communities are also participating in the survey by reporting their sightings, enhancing the effectiveness of research and providing a community database.
