DACED: Democracy and Citizenship in Education – Research – Department of Teacher Education
DACED: Democracy and Citizenship in Education
Democracies need engaged and competent citizens. That is why democratic competence is an important goal of education. How can schools enable young citizens to protect and develop democracy in a world where many democratic societies are under pressure?

About us
Democracies are facing challenges such as lower trust, lower participation, increased polarization, the spread of fake news, and the rise of anti-democratic attitudes. This is happening at the same time as major international changes that are putting the world order under pressure. These developments create new challenges for democracy and citizenship education in schools, universities, and as a field of research.
DACED responds to these changes through a scientific collaboration between researchers who, in different ways, focus on youth, democracy, and citizenship. The research group is based in the social sciences section at the Department of Teacher Education at NTNU.
