Children without seatbelts among 7 injured in Southwest Michigan crash

CASS COUNTY, MI - Seven people were injured, including five children, in a two-vehicle crash on Saturday morning.

Cass County Sheriff deputies responded at 10:30 a.m. to the area of M-51 and Crystal Springs Street in Pokagon Township.

A 41-year-old Niles man was driving north on M-51 with five juvenile passengers and another adult when he rear-ended a vehicle.

The children were not wearing their seatbelts, or in proper child restraints, police said.

The vehicle that got hit was driven by a 63-year-old man from Portage.

The first vehicle’s driver and his passengers, including a 35-year-old woman from Niles, and five juveniles, were transported by SMCAS Ambulance to Memorial Hospital and Niles Corewell Health for injuries sustained in the crash.

Pokagon Tribal Police, Michigan State Police and Pokagon Township Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
