  • 💡 Spotlight on the Madrid System💡 The Madrid System – born through the “Madrid Agreement for the International Registration of Marks” back in April 1891 – is the oldest of WIPO’s brands and designs-related Systems. It was developed in response to the challenges posed by growing international trade. Radical 19th century advances in means of transportation and communication meant a massive flow of products across borders, where few of the associated trademarks were protected. Why weren’t they protected? In simple terms, because it was too expensive and too complicated to register them abroad. The Madrid Agreement was designed to remedy this situation by enabling entrepreneurs to safeguard their brands beyond their national borders – within any other member country of the future Agreement – through a single, centralized and cost-effective mechanism. 💡 Did you know? The first draft of the Madrid Agreement was written by Switzerland where names and products particularly in the watch and chocolate industries were becoming increasingly well-known beyond Swiss borders. ☑️ In 1893 – the first year of operations – 76 requests for international trademark registrations were filed. ☑️By 1995 – just over 100 years later – applicants from 28 countries filed more than 22,000 requests for new international trademark registrations. ☑️ In 2023, users filed some 64,000 applications through the Madrid System, clearly illustrating the important role that international trademark protection is playing in the global marketplace. 👏 Get more statistics on the Madrid System: https://lnkd.in/ec6aRWZi And, check back soon to find out more about the youngest of our brands and designs-related Systems. #WIPO #MadridSystem #MadridAgreement #Madrid #Trademarks #Marks #InternationalTrademarkRegistrations #Switzerland #Brands #Statistics
