  • The new year brings new opportunity for success in American technology and economic competitiveness. AI promises to drive innovation and boost productivity in every sector of the economy, and the U.S. can lead this new technology wave.    Microsoft’s three-part vision for this success focuses on advancements and investments of over $80B in AI technology and infrastructure, skilling programs for AI adoption, and exporting American AI to allies.   Read more from our Vice Chair and President Brad Smith: https://lnkd.in/g3SMrQGz #AI #TechForGood #AIForGood

  • Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a process for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in rocks. When scaled effectively, ERW is capable of removing gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere. By measuring variables like groundwater pH, soil type, and organic carbon content, Terradot aims to scale the deployment of ERW and significantly increase carbon removal from the atmosphere.    Microsoft's investment in Terradot is core to the strategy to leverage AI and data-driven solutions for sustainability. Last week, I led Microsoft’s delegation to the AI Action Summit in Paris. The Summit had a much broader focus than prior summits, covering the AI opportunity agenda as well as the future of work, culture and innovation, and the governance of AI. It was well attended by governments, civil society, industry, and academia, and we were pleased to engage with colleagues from every continent and across many different sectors. In the spirit of the Summit’s commitment to action, I want to focus on what needs to be done next. In my view, summits are defined as much by the momentum that they generate going forward as they are by the conversations that take place on the summit days. I outline three areas that warrant focus and attention in the weeks and months ahead to continue the momentum of the AI Action Summit. At Microsoft, we look forward to doing our part to enable AI innovation and adoption through good governance.

The World Economic Forum predicts that nearly 60% of workers will need AI training by 2030 to stay competitive. That’s why Microsoft is helping build the capacity of local organizations across government, education, industry, and nonprofits to scale our skilling efforts and empower everyone to meet the demands of the AI economy.     Partnering with governments around the world to provide resources and training is an essential part of ensuring individuals and communities have the skills they need to thrive today and in the future. Here’s how we’re making an impact:    🤝 Helping government agencies develop AI training programs and policies that promote responsible use.  🤝 Upskilling civic and public leaders by streamlining administrative tasks and expanding their capacity to focus on what matters most—delivering meaningful impact.  🤝 Strengthening public-private partnerships to scale skilling efforts and create a more inclusive, AI-ready workforce.    These collaborations highlight the importance of continuous learning in a fast-changing world. AI skilling isn’t just about policy—it’s about creating opportunity, strengthening economies, and ensuring more people can benefit from AI-driven innovation.

A couple reflections on the quantum computing breakthrough we just announced... Most of us grew up learning there are three main types of matter that matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Today, that changed. After a nearly 20 year pursuit, we’ve created an entirely new state of matter, unlocked by a new class of materials, topoconductors, that enable a fundamental leap in computing. It powers Majorana 1, the first quantum processing unit built on a topological core. We believe this breakthrough will allow us to create a truly meaningful quantum computer not in decades, as some have predicted, but in years. The qubits created with topoconductors are faster, more reliable, and smaller. They are 1/100th of a millimeter, meaning we now have a clear path to a million-qubit processor. Imagine a chip that can fit in the palm of your hand yet is capable of solving problems that even all the computers on Earth today combined could not! Sometimes researchers have to work on things for decades to make progress possible. It takes patience and persistence to have big impact in the world. And I am glad we get the opportunity to do just that at Microsoft. This is our focus: When productivity rises, economies grow faster, benefiting every sector and every corner of the globe. It’s not about hyping tech; it’s about building technology that truly serves the world. Today, I joined Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw to announce a 2.8 billion Polish złoty (PLN) investment, the second phase of the build-out of our Polish Cloud region that started operations in 2023. This is not only a capital investment, but a vote of confidence in Poland, its economy, its leadership, and its people. We have enormous optimism in Poland's future and the ability of this nation to harness AI to advance its economy and competitiveness. Microsoft
