With its bachelor‘s and master’s degree programs, the Faculty of Digital Engineering, established jointly by HPI and the University of Potsdam, offers innovative engineering- and application-oriented study programs. At present, about 900 students are enrolled in the program. The Faculty consistently earns a top-notch place in the CHE University Ranking. The d-school, HPI’s School of Design Thinking, is Europe’s first innovation school for university students. It is based on the Stanford model of the d.school and offers 160 places annually for a supplementary study. The HPI ENGINE, the entrepreneurship ecosystem at HPI, supports and motivates students to recognize and take advantage of the potential of entrepreneurial thinking and action. A strong focus is placed on the transfer of ideas and digital technologies into customer- and market-centered products and start-ups. At HPI there are currently twenty-four professors and about 50 lecturers. HPI conducts research noted for its high standard of excellence in its IT topic areas. PhD candidates carry out research at the HPI Research Schools in Potsdam and its branches in Cape Town (South Africa) and Irvine (California). The focus of HPI’s teaching and research is on the foundations and applications of large, highly complex and networked IT systems. In addition, HPI concentrates on the development and research of user-oriented innovations for all areas of life. When she is not working on biostatistics or teaching, you’ll find her in the HPI Maker Universe, where she pursues her passion for vertical hydroponic gardening. In the video, Elizabeth shares:  👉 What statistics and gossip have in common 📊🗣️  👉 How she made her way across the Atlantic to Griebnitzsee in Potsdam 🌊  👉 How she was inspired – and now inspires others ✨  👉 What 3D printing from the HPI Maker Universe has to do with her green thumb 🌱 The Hasso Plattner Institute and the Hasso Plattner Foundation aim to inspire young people in computer science and train the digital leaders of tomorrow. The institute is proud to have people like Elizabeth, who drive the community forward and foster collaboration on campus. #HPI #womaninresarch

  • 🚀 Pioneering Gender Medicine: Prof. Dr. Carolin Lerchenmüller Carolin Lerchenmüller is Switzerland’s first professor of gender medicine. At the Universität Zürich | University of Zurich, she researches the diseases with the most significant gender differences and integrates these findings into clinical care, medical education, and research. In addition, she regularly sees patients during her gender medicine clinic hours in the cardiology department at the Universitätsspital Zürich. We had the opportunity to interview her about her research: 🔎 What does gender medicine mean? “Gender medicine – or sex- and gender-sensitive medicine – considers the connection between biological sex and socio-cultural gender and how these factors influence health and disease. At our department, we focus on integrating these aspects into clinical practice, medical education, and, most importantly, research.” One widely discussed example of gender-specific medicine is heart attacks. In women, they present with different symptoms, risk factors, causes, and treatment responses than in men. Another example is depression, where symptoms in men often appear less "typical," leading to later or incorrect diagnoses and suboptimal treatment. 🔬 A Matter of Equal Opportunity A topic particularly close to Carolin Lerchenmüller’s heart is equal opportunity, which is already a key focus of her research. “Scientific evidence helps challenge outdated beliefs. For example, by making our data transparent, we gained significant support and successfully drove change within the German Cardiac Society.” 💡 Her Advice for Women in Science & Medicine As a cardiologist, scientist, professor, and mother, Lerchenmüller shares this advice: "Never underestimate the power of passion. Devote yourself to what excites you—this perspective makes the long hours of ‘work’ worthwhile. And, most importantly, find an environment where you feel valued and can grow.” 📢 Don't miss her talk at the HPI Digital Health Innovation Forum on March 26–27, 2025, where she will share valuable insights into the necessity of gender medicine. 👉 Join us: https://lnkd.in/eaT-cdVS Ariel Dora Stern Lothar H. • From the USA to Potsdam: Julia Dennett’s research sheds light on Global Health Crises   🎓 Doctorate: In health policy from Harvard University 🧐 Research area: Health economics and determinants of health at HPI in the Digital Health Cluster 👉 https://lnkd.in/dibtTGz5  ☕️ Latest talent: Making good cappuccino and diligently learning German, favorite word: “cinnamon bun” ⭐️ Most precious advice: Surround yourself with scientists who inspire and improve your work - through helpful feedback and because you can learn from them.  Julia Dennett works as a scientist at HPI. She is a postdoc in the field of #DigitalHealth, her research focuses on the determinants of health and innovation in healthcare. She moved to Germany with her family just a few months ago. What drives her? Getting to the bottom of health crises and understanding correlations so that policymakers can take better action in the future. “The most rewarding part is when you start to see the results, and others become as excited about your findings as you are! ”  Prior to HPI, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Yale School of Public Health and worked extensively on the opioid crisis in the US.  #Opioids are extremely strong painkillers. Nowhere else in the Western world are there as many people addicted to these substances as in the #USA. Tens of thousands die every year as a result. Julia is currently in the final stages of a scientific paper - among other things, she is investigating the effect of heat on drug overdose mortality in the United States.

Catalysts of change: Prof. Ariel Dora Stern about what to expect at HPI's Digital Health Innovation Forum 👇 “Much of my life has been spent appreciating the immense value of learning from one another by sharing experiences and insights across countries and contexts." Anyone who meets Professor Dr. Ariel Dora Stern immediately senses that she is a doer. Someone who wants to make things happen. Someone who seems to have endless energy to carry others along with her.     Ariel Dora Stern is the Alexander von Humboldt Professor for Digital Health, Economics and Policy at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam. Alongside Prof. Lothar H. Wieler, Professor for Digital Global Public Health, she is hosting the new upcoming HPI event in the field of Digital Health, the Digital Health Innovation Forum.      ❗️Why is this forum necessary?!      “Today, healthcare faces a new set of challenges. We’ve inherited institutions for regulating, delivering, and financing care that were designed in the last century - without consideration for the transformative technologies shaping this one. Even the most capable policymakers and business leaders cannot drive change alone. What’s needed is forward-thinking collaboration at the cutting edge of research to develop frameworks that adapt and evolve with today’s rapidly changing landscape”, says Prof. Stern.     Read the full interview on how this forum can be a problem solver for the current healthcare situation and what personally drives Prof. Ariel Dora Stern to take on this project 👉https://lnkd.in/euG3_5js    Be part of the progress and join us at the Digital Health Innovation Forum:  🔜 Date: March 26 and 27 💡More info & registration: https://lnkd.in/eaT-cdVS #DHIF2025 #DigitalHealth #Innovation
