Only 1-5% of raw materials needed for renewable and low-carbon energy technologies are produced within the EU. Cobalt, lithium, copper – these, together with other materials, are indispensable for our clean energy technologies, as they can be found in batteries, solar panels and wind turbines. However, they come with a high risk of supply disruptions, that’s why we call them critical raw materials (CRMs). Our scientists help the EU to map and understand where critical raw materials come from. They asses the risks connected to their supply chains, their future demand, environmental footprints and recycling, finding ways towards strategic autonomy. Our work also contributed to the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, making it feasible and robust while providing an important basis for policy interventions. Research knows no borders — even in times of war and crisis. Russia's invasion of Ukraine disrupted Oksana Khymych’s life. With her children, she found refuge in the Netherlands where she continued her research on innovative entrepreneurship there. Her work explores how startups can navigate crises and play a role in rebuilding Ukraine’s economy. Supporting displaced researchers is not just about preserving careers — it’s about safeguarding knowledge, fostering excellent science and ensuring that innovative progress continues, no matter the circumstances. That is what the #MSCA4Ukraine programme is all about. 🔗 Read her story: https://europa.eu/!cf3V8g

What are the key areas shaping Europe's competitive edge in today's dynamic global economy? From analysing technological capabilities to the role of strategic investments, our latest three R&I Paper Series publications provide insightful strategies for EU policymakers to enhance innovation, productivity, and competitiveness. ▪️ The first paper, on EU Competitiveness, dives into the role of intangible assets in boosting labour productivity and close the EU-US productivity gap. ▪️ The second paper, on R&I policy impact, uses RADAR, a system dynamics model, to assess how EU R&I funding accelerates R&D to market uptake of key technologies like mRNA and green hydrogen. It also proposes strategies for aligning funding with technology maturity and partner landscape. ▪️ The third paper showcases how complexity and relatedness can transform EU policy, helping design targeted interventions that capitalise on regional strengths and emerging opportunities. More sustainable farming practices are possible! 🌱 We just launched the Farming Practices Evidence Library, a new comprehensive dataset that compiles scientific insights on the environmental and climate effects of different farming methods. The content of the library has already been used for policy evaluation: a recent European Commission study showed that specific farming practices could cut emissions by at least 31 million tons of CO2e annually. That’s almost the amount of Finland’s yearly total CO2e emissions! Together with a user-friendly dashboard, the library provides accessible and science-based evidence for policymakers and researchers. Farmers wishing to improve their practices will also find useful information in it. By linking research results to specific environmental indicators, it makes it easier to evaluate agricultural interventions that improve sustainability.
