We're excited to kick off our Technology Spotlight series, where we’ll be showcasing the latest innovations from Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 🔬🔎🧬 This week’s Technology Spotlight features Vanderbilt University researchers Dr. Susie Lin and Dr. Kevin Galloway, who have developed a novel surgical guide for Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy (IVRO). This minimally invasive, low-cost device is designed to conform to the natural curvature of the jaw, ensuring precise osteotomy cuts while protecting critical nerves and blood vessels. By addressing issues like open bite, long-term neurosensory deficits, and active bleeding, it offers a safer, more accurate approach to jaw surgery. Prototypes are currently in testing, and a patent application has been filed. HUGE congratulations to.. U.S. TRAIN (Peter Embí, M.D., M.S. [Vanderbilt University Medical Center], M.S., Eric Peterson [University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center], Michael Pencina [Duke Health], etc.) and Europe TRAIN (Michel van Genderen [Erasmus MC], Ilse Kant [UMC Utrecht], Carlo Tacchetti [Ospedale San Raffaele], Stefan Jovinge [Region Skåne], etc.).. on their recent JAMA 2025 launch publications! The goal for the Trustworthy & Responsible AI Network (#TRAIN) is to "operationalize" responsible AI (#RAI) principles. At a minimum, this involves: (1) Inventorying AI models (using model cards) (2) Testing AI models on local data sets (3) Monitoring AI models for drift and impact on outcomes/ROI (by developing a federated AI outcomes registry) (4) Assessing for bias in the models and in how AI impacts subpopulations (5) Streamlined governance To do this at scale and with the least amount of time, resources, and cost, TRAIN members intend to leverage: 1. Technologies - designed to enable/facilitate RAI 2. Collaboration - distributed workloads for AI testing and monitoring 3.
