SAP’s Vision for AI-Powered Transformation in Business

SAP is making significant strides in integrating AI across its suite of business solutions, transforming decision-making processes and optimizing operations. During the recent SAP Innovation Council in New York, I had the privilege of speaking with Sean Kask, Chief AI Strategy Officer at SAP, to explore SAP’s AI initiatives and future direction.

Embedded AI Across Business Domains SAP integrates AI capabilities directly into its core business areas, including:

These AI-driven features are built on the SAP Business Technology Platform and leverage the SAP Business Data Cloud for semantically rich data and insights.

Generative AI Agents SAP is pioneering generative AI with tools like:

• Joule: A generative AI copilot designed to navigate SAP systems and execute transactions efficiently.

• Agent Builder: A customizable tool enabling customers and partners to create tailored AI agents for specific business processes. For example, an agent for dispute management can classify disputes and retrieve relevant data automatically.

Expansion of AI Use Cases SAP is rapidly expanding its portfolio of AI-driven features, with 400 new use cases planned across its products. As Sean explained during our interview, “At SAP Sapphire last year, we introduced 130 new AI use cases, with plans to add 270 more this year.” These innovations are set to provide predictive analytics to identify risks like customer churn and optimize operational efficiency, such as cash flow management.

AI-Powered Predictive Analytics By leveraging system-wide data and contextual understanding of business processes, SAP’s predictive analytics provide actionable insights to improve decision-making. As Sean noted, “By leveraging system-wide data and context, we empower users to make actionable, informed decisions.” These capabilities allow businesses to proactively address risks or inefficiencies based on insights.

Business Data Cloud Integration The SAP Business Data Cloud, integrated with Databricks, simplifies AI development and consumption by providing a unified data foundation. This enables more effective use of semantically rich data across applications.

Ethical and Responsible AI Development SAP emphasizes ethical AI practices, ensuring human oversight, relevance, reliability, and responsible scaling of AI technologies. As Sean explained, SAP is committed to ensuring that all AI applications are developed responsibly and with human oversight at every significant decision-making stage.

Strategic Partnerships

SAP collaborates with leading technology providers like Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, NVIDIA, Meta, Anthropic, Cohere, and others to enhance its AI ecosystem. These partnerships support innovation in foundational technologies for generative AI and machine learning.

Future Vision

SAP envisions a transformation in enterprise management through the convergence of Business Data Cloud and generative AI agents. As Sean highlighted during our interview, “With our applications and business processes powered by semantically rich data, we can now build AI agents that span multiple business domains.” These agents are designed to automate complex, cross-domain processes and provide seamless decision-making capabilities across business functions.

While the potential of AI agents is immense, Sean emphasizes the importance of human oversight: “Before any significant action is taken, a human will be involved in the decision-making process.”
