Disruption - who's disrupting who?

Disruption is one of the most used buzzwords...psychiatry looks at disruptive behavior as a disease...in fact we might consider that some of worldwide industries in fact are suffering with this disease;

Airline Business

Low cost carriers came years ago and they disrupted completely the airline business, forcing legacy carriers to downsize and innovate...Low cost carriers emerged using digital platforms for booking, now being able to leverage big data, track travellers behavior, challenging legacy airlines at their most deep of their core business.

Will legacy airlines be able to innovate offering on time performance, excellent customer experience at an affordable price?

Hospitality

Having read an article where several hospitality and tourism executives discussed the future of hospitality and the threat regarding Airbnb market position, a thought came into my mind: As bigger is the elephant as more slowly will move...

Airbnb recent news that bookings can be made via GDS and the set up of a Business Travel Corporate Sales Department will soon put a small business within the so-called collaborative economy as one of the biggest disruptive companies in the world.

Will the hospitality industry move forward leveraging their data bases and build local lodging partnerships ensuring optimization of Revenue by serving different customers needs with flexibility and taking advantage of touristic traffic increase during events?  Marketing Intelligence and dynamic Sales Managers might help...

Transportation

Recently in Portugal a Taxi drive companies strike blocked Lisbon during one day. Uber was at fault as well another similar company Cabify. The disruption arisen from this business as huge and a lot of discussion regarding the business model and legal issues came up.

Again an empire was challenged by a company that uses a digital platform to operate allowing traveller tracking, their booking behavior and therefore the optimization of customer experience and the continuous development of new services.

Bla Bla Car is likely to be the next disruption in transportation.

Retail Business

Jeff Bezos jumped ahead Warren Buffet in the list of the world richest. Despite all retail chains have their e-commerce platform, the fact is that Amazon disrupted several retail businesses. The millennial generation tries the product in the store, buys at Amazon. At the moment we can find our favorite tea on a 3 pack bundle with discount at Amazon, and news came up that they signed a deal with Dia%.

Fashion Retail Business

The Fashion Retail business was probably the business that started soon taking advantage of the e-commerce platforms and despite the virtual show rooms that came up, only Farfetch causes some disruption by making available fashion of unknown designers available through the world.

FMCG/Consumer Goods

Who is responsible for the sales downturn at food & beverages? The consumer protection and the world wide web brings information more easy to find, and companies that produce healthy and tasty food are gaining the market slowly by using the digital as their main media to influence consumers, namely organic food industry.

L'Oreal, is already leveraging the organic market with Sanoflore, The Coca-Cola Company also acquired recently an organic juices brand and Nestlé CEO just come from Fresenius, as well Vitaflo their newest company shows signs of a change in the business strategy.

The sugar tax, in Portugal already became known as the Coca-Cola tax and will certainly bring the need for deep and quick change in food & beverages. The cash cows cash flow will have to finance new product development to ensure tasty but healthy food and avoid an even bigger downsizing.

From photography, books to food & beverage trends, the internet and the digital platforms contributed to the disruption.

How will some of this industries overcome the disruption? Thoughts?

The status quo culture is no longer in place, disruption, and innovation are the new culture in the Digital Era.
