Book Pricing

I've started working on two books. In that context, with my background in product management, I've been mulling over pricing strategies and am curious what others think.

In PM, we generally think about pricing as being derived from three factors:

  1. The Market/Wallet Share - it would seem unreasonable to ask $50k for a software product others sell for $2k, especially if the company has only budgeted $3k for the year on software.

  2. The Value Delivered - if my product saves you $2k/day, you should be willing to pay $1k/day for it. (Employees and Alumni of Vista Equity Partners know about the "SaaS/On Prem Calculator" used to show potential buyers the cost of self-hosting vs SaaS).

  3. Our Cost - if it costs us $500/month to support the product and $1M to build it, our pricing should reflect that.

When looking at that framework in the context of pricing for books, it seems the first factor dominates and the second is non-existent. Hardcover books generally price in the $12-$20 range. Textbooks or coffee table books, which can sell for a multiple of that, may be impacted by the 3rd factor. However (and perhaps I'm just not familiar enough with the space), I'm not aware of really important/impactful books selling for significantly more than others.

Stemming from childhood trauma, related to a book report on Christy Mathewson (ask me next time you see me), I don't enjoy reading. I read non-fiction because I believe it to be essential for growth.

All this is background to the following question I have been pondering. Would people be willing to pay more for a significantly shorter book (e.g., 50 pages) that provided all the value a much longer (e.g., 300 page) book does? Theoretically, the value provided is higher - you get the same learnings, but it takes up less of your time to do so. I understand that with fiction, this question doesn't really make sense; most people read fiction for the escape, so shortening the read is counter productive. But shouldn't it make sense in the non-fiction space?

Thoughts?

The Summary book versions seem to have a good following. Akin to the old Cliff's Notes.
