2021: A Year in Review
It was another year of tremendous change, record-breaking growth, and continued disruption in the world of residential real estate. Technology, coupled with venture capital, is fueling a proliferation of new models across the industry. But some fundamentals haven't changed: human beings, powered by technology, remain the critical center of the transaction.
In another year of rapid change, I believe that unbiased, evidence-based insights and original research are more important than ever. Thank you for supporting my ability to contribute to an industry-wide understanding of the changes taking place.
My Highlights of 2021
Deep Industry Research
I released two major research projects this year: The 2021 Emerging Models in Real Estate Report and The Real Estate Portal Strategy Handbook. Both are packed with original ideas and evidence-based insights.
Keynote Presentations
Suffering from "Zoom fatigue" after 2020, I did fewer virtual speaking engagements this year. But I did return to the stage for "How To Lose A Billion Dollars In Real Estate Tech."
Timely Industry Analysis
I published a ton of original research and analysis, coining some fantastic phrases like Power Buying, monetization nihilism, and the immaculate conception of iBuying.
Zillow Goes Boom
The demise of Zillow Offers sent shock waves through the industry. My research, insights, and commentary were featured across a variety of media outlets including CNN, Marketplace, The WSJ, Bloomberg, The Economist, and more. That was a busy month.
Real Estate Tech 101
It was another great year for my real estate tech course with more students and more guest speakers than ever. I also recorded this fun promo video for the class.
...and Back to Colorado
After 18 months in New Zealand, my family and I are returning home to Colorado in January. I’m tremendously grateful for our time here — I’m sure that some day we’ll be back again. Stay classy, New Zealand.
Looking Ahead
For the year ahead, I'm excited to connect with a community of real estate tech folks in and around Boulder, engage deeper with my students (past and present), and continue to provide timely, thought-provoking research and deep strategic analysis.
That's a wrap on 2021. Thanks for another engaging and fulfilling year. See you in 2022!
