10 years ago when we were just getting Rhumbix off the ground I pitched over 50 institutional investors and the vast majority told me "construction is not an investable market for venture capital." Fast forward to yesterday and TECH WEEK by a16z featured not one, but two sessions, completely dedicated to technology and innovation in the construction industry! It was great to catch up with some amazing friends, founders, and investors including René Morkos, Ph.D. (ALICE Technologies Inc.), Jeevan Kalanithi (OpenSpace), Forest Flager (Parspec), Kevin Soohoo (Egnyte), Claire Wilson (Siteline), Kevin Albert (Canvas), Colin Evran (Protocol Labs), Tim Hsia (Context VC), Mostafa Akbari Hochberg (FARO Building Insights, formerly Holobuilder), Jake Olsen, P.E. (Stratus), Kaustubh Pandya, Alice Leung, Austin Yount, and Darren Bechtel (Brick & Mortar Ventures), Stephen Haskin (Buildup), and Nelson Koen (Stanford University). The past 10 years I've watched the construction industry change its perspective on technology from technology being a cost center, to technology being table stakes for remaining relevant in one of the most competitive industries in the world. And for many construction companies, technology has become a competitive differentiator in a crowded market (ask Kevin Albert how Canvas's customers are winning more work because they're deploying drywall-finishing robots). It's crazy to reflect on how much has changed in the construction industry in the past 10 years of digital transformation, and yet it still feels like we're in the early innings of the sector's digital transformation. The next 10 years are very exciting and I believe will be driven by the converging waves of AI and Robotics that help unlock the next stage of progress and improved project outcomes. Onwards!
Zach thank you always for sharing your stories as a construction tech OG!!!!
Worth noting this panel referenced things they learned from Zach Scheel, P.E. and Rhumbix no less than 5 times. Truly an OG in construction tech !
Thanks for being one of the best people I've ever met in startups and across all my life adventures
I remember when you were just a few dudes dressed like construction workers in the office. Thought you guys were entertainers. Turns out your badass founders.... only wish I had begged you to invest. :-)
You and team are pioneers and continue to make huge impact in the Construction industry!
Congratulations on the milestone and the incredible journey over the past decade! Your post really captures how the construction industry has transformed its view on technology—from a perceived cost center to a key differentiator in the market. It's fascinating to see how companies like Rhumbix have been at the forefront of this shift. You're absolutely right about the role of AI and robotics. These technologies will undoubtedly continue to redefine what's possible and drive even greater efficiencies and innovations. With continued focus on tech adoption, companies in this space are well-positioned to tackle the challenges ahead. What are you most excited about in the next phase of this digital evolution?
I first heard about Rhumbix back in 2017 at ENR FutureTech
Zach Scheel, P.E. I'm so grateful to you for blazing trails for us! Covid kept me away from TECH WEEK by a16z this year, but I'm looking forward to many more sessions next year highlighting all the incredible accomplishments and lasting value created by VC-backed contech startups.
Beautifully written Zach. It’s awesome to see how far things have come in the last decade - and you are right, the next decade is going to be extremely exciting !
