🚨 "Quantum technology will change society dramatically." Really? How many ‘ifs’ need to be accepted for me to believe in that promise? 🔮 This week, I took part in a thought-provoking workshop about HYPE. Is quantum technology ‘over-hyped’? What does that even mean? And does it matter? Over three days, we discussed these questions with a multidisciplinary group at the Lorentz Center in Leiden. 🌡️ One personal takeaway: hype isn’t just a surge in attention—it’s unjustified attention. I think it’s crucial to scrutinise the current excitement around quantum tech, not out of scepticism but for the sake of rational debate. In the meantime, we can already contribute to this by subjecting bold claims to a simple (in)sanity check: 'Does this sound too good to be true?' If it does, it probably is too good to be Q... #toogoodtobeQ? Thank you Julia Cramer, Clare Shelley-Egan, Pieter Vermaas, and Joris van Hoboken from the Centre for Quantum and Society for organising this event and thematising hype.
