With tools like LLMs and GPT, we’re at a turning point, and staying curious, planning carefully, and aligning our efforts are key. These posts about how AI is going to come right miss two key points. a) The last 10% of perfection is always the hardest part of the process and takes 90% of the effort. In other words, AI is only 10% of the way there in terms of effort needed. b) There is no easy *automatable* way to identify where the 10% of the problems are with AI output - it requires human insight, and experience to identify the hallucinations or the 'uncanny valleys'. AI is going through the same pattern of misplaced optimism as almost every other technical advance. This is one of the biggest tech bubbles yet... so when it bursts it is going to be messy.
The parallels between early internet adoption and AI in localization are striking. It's fascinating to see how technology reshapes industries, but caution is warranted. I think the "slow and steady" approach is wise given the potential for disruption. How will the rise of synthetic media impact the need for human translators in this evolving landscape?
