Don O. and Rich D. (Gladstone Group – Groton, CT, store) awarded the New London Homeless Hospitality Center with two checks from Wireless Zone Gives grants. The NLHHC will use them to provide cellphones to the people they serve so they can stay connected. They are the only warming center in Southeastern Connecticut and this year they are feeling that strain more than ever. They look forward to expanding their partnership to help NLHHC continue their fight against homelessness. Things I love about St Petrock's No. 11: We are independent. Yes, another of those pesky Values: Independence: By staying independent, we can always put those we help first. I'll be honest, when I started at St Pet's 3 years ago and everyone was banging on about being independent, it felt like it was a bit of a fetish! I also found it quite annoying as I am a firm believer in partnership working, knowing that no one charity/org can solve a problem as complex as homelessness. But as time has gone on, I've changed my view. I now love the insistence on remaining independent. That does NOT mean we think we have all the answers (we certainly don't), or that other agencies aren't doing a great job (they mostly are). What it does mean is that our clients ALWAYS come first. And that means we won't allow ourselves to get into a place where we don't put them first. How does this work in practice? A few examples: - We'd love to have more public money to support our work. But we won't bid for a contract if we don't believe the specified service is in the best interests of those experiencing homelessness. ALL the specified service - we aren't going to be party to anything that works against those we support. (Or for that matter if the contract is offered with the expectation that we'll get our supporters to top up the cost of a statutory contract by their donations. Err, no, that's not happening. You donate to fund the charity, not the local authority!) - We won't be silent on issues that matter. Occasionally we know that makes us annoying to others, some of which would rather we weren't around. And occasionally it means we might alienate potential supporters. Which is sad, but so be it. We exist to help those who experience homelessness, not anyone else. - We try to help homeless people speak for themselves, including publicly via the media. We won't always agree with what they say, or express things the way they do. But hey, we've not been trying to sleep in sub-zero temperatures in a wet sleeping bag, having been moved on from the sheltered place we'd found to bed down. #Homeless people are largely voiceless. Largely ignored by politicians (except as a problem to be dealt with) because generally they don't vote. That needs to change, and we will help them find their voice. - We won't accept any funding if the price is that we shut up, or do things in a way that compromises our mission or values. We can maintain this independence because YOU - the public and the businesses of #Exeter - give generously so that we don't feel so desperate for funds that we'll take the King's shilling. Thank you! www.stpetrocks.org.uk

When people think about homelessness, they often have a very specific experience in mind – someone sleeping rough on the streets. While rough sleeping is the most visible form of homelessness, it only represents a small proportion of people experiencing homelessness. For every person you see sleeping on the street, there will be many more you don’t see – people experiencing ‘hidden homelessness.’ They could be sofa surfing, sleeping in a van just like Peter did for a year, or living in temporary accommodation. At Glass Door Homeless Charity, our services are open access, meaning that no matter who you are or where you are from you can turn to us for support. We support people in a wide range of situations, from those worried about losing their home to those experiencing hidden homelessness or rough sleeping. Support our work by donating to our Christmas Appeal: glassdoor.org.uk/christmas

The latest homelessness stats have been released and they paint a bleak picture. More children than ever are experiencing homelessness in England, including here in Greater Manchester. Too many young people are at critical stages of their young adulthood without the safety and security of a home. This disrupts learning, it disrupts relationships and it disrupts lives. We hope the new approaches that the new Government has tabled, especially their plans for housing, will provide some positive news in the months ahead, but as these figures show, there is a national crisis taking place. In the past five years, the Greater Manchester Mayor's Charity has been able to fund over 78,000 nights of accommodation in our A Bed Every Night scheme for those who would otherwise have been sleeping on our streets, but we must do more. Everyone has a human right to have shelter and to feel safe. No one should be without a home, and we must continue to provide as much support as possible to those made most vulnerable by our society. Every donation we receive is vital to achieving this goal, allowing us to share funding where it’s needed most across each of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. Businesses can help support through corporate donations or by installing one of our ‘Tap to Donate’ machines at till points. The Best Gift This Season? A Place to Call Home. We’re racing against time. Oakland families of color are facing the harsh realities of homelessness, and the clock is ticking—we have less than 60 days to raise $500,000 to secure a building that can house families immediately. The property is everything we’ve been working toward—a beautiful, move-in-ready property with space to heal, rebuild, and grow. But without your help, this opportunity will slip away. What You Can Do: Donate any amount today at www.just-homes.org. Every dollar counts. Start a Giving Tuesday fundraiser to rally your network around this urgent cause. Share this message to help us reach more people. This isn’t just about providing housing—it’s about creating a future where families of color in Oakland can thrive. Let’s give the gift of hope, dignity, and stability this holiday season. Every day counts. Toronto Affordability? In all seriousness this is an excellent project to give homeless people a safer more mobile place to live. Shelter from the elements, especially in winter could provide a better quality of life for those who cannot access shelters. One question is how will this be funded? In my opinion there should be a private/public partnership with provincial and federal governments and they should include this in their plan to provide shelter to those in need.
Edit: Ryan built this mobile home as an alternative solution to the homeless tent encampments around the city. Check out tinytinyhomes.ca for more info or to donate 🫶 *** Move over, micro condos. Check out this Vox article to learn about one organization's new approach to tackling homelessness amid our ongoing housing crisis. From 2012 to 2016, Mandy Chapman Semple reduced Houston’s homelessness rate by 60%. Her strategy? Using private donations to help finance things like apartment hold fees, application fees, security deposits, and furniture. Or in simpler terms, using flexible private dollars to incentivize landlords, making it easier to move unhoused people into apartments. Once again, the number of children experiencing homelessness has risen. In Greater Manchester, that's 7,679 children living in uncertainty and disruption. At the same time, we've seen a rise in the number of households owed a relief duty by their local authority. In other words, a rise in the number of households who are currently homeless. Genuinely affordable housing, meaningful preventative work, and full wrap around support to people without a home or facing a night on the streets are some of the raft of measures needed to truly end homelessness, and truly eradicate the need for rough sleeping. Greater Manchester Mayor's Charity are proud to support so many dedicated organisations in the city-region working hard to bring about real change, but we depend on the generosity and support of the businesses and people of the region to do that. If you can, help us be a lifeline to organisations on the frontline. https://lnkd.in/eH-Y9J9R We'll keep advocating for them, supporting them, and getting as much funding to them as we possibly can. Together, let's end #homelessness. After many years of procrastination, I have finally decided to do the Great North Run this year in aid of a great North East charity, Oasis Community Housing. Thousands of people face the pain, fear and trauma of homelessness across England. Oasis Community Housing brings comfort, care and practical support to people facing homelessness each year, people who have, in some cases, spent years sleeping under bridges, in sheds, car parks, parks before finding one of Oasis Community Housing's Basis homeless drop-in centre. Figures from The Big Issue show that 358,370 households contacted their local authority for support after being threatened with homelessness or losing their home in 2023-24, up more than 10% in a year. Of these, 324,990 were assessed as homeless. Record numbers of households are living in temporary accommodation in England. A total of 123,100 households were living in temporary accommodation in June 2024 – a record-high and 16.3% higher than a year ago. The number of households with children in temporary accommodation rose annually by 15.1% to 78,420. The total number of children living in temporary accommodation has now reached 159,830. Please give what you can for this amazing charity, your support means the world. All love and thanks, Rico https://lnkd.in/e5BisG4f

World Homeless Day: A Chance to Make a Difference 🏠✨ On this #WorldHomelessDay, I'm reflecting on how we can better support individuals without stable housing. Homelessness is an issue that affects communities across the globe, including right here in the UK. According to Shelter, over 250,000 people are homeless in England alone. This is a stark reminder that our efforts to combat homelessness are far from over. It's essential to remember that everyone has a role to play. Whether it's volunteering your time, donating to local shelters, or simply raising awareness about the challenges faced by homeless individuals, every action counts. From my own experiences, I've seen how community support can significantly impact lives and help people regain stability. Let's use today as a catalyst for positive change. I encourage you all to engage in conversations, share your thoughts, and take steps towards making a difference. Together, we can contribute to ending homelessness and building a more inclusive society. #HomelessnessAwareness #WorldHomelessDay #CommunitySupport #vetrorecruitment #vetro
