Will AI help or harm school education? US school teachers are mainly unsure or have a balanced view, while those with clear opinions are firmly negative. High school teachers are the most negative, with 35% saying there is more harm than benefit. Probably many or most teachers have not experienced the best use cases of AI for education. And the impact will of course depend on how the tools are used. AI will be used by students anyway. Teachers and schools can learn and share with students how best to use it so it truly does assist learning rather than work around established teaching methods and assessment. I hear a lot about resistance to AI in organizations. It is far from surprising that many teachers are resisting, or highly cautious at best. In a world in which AI is accelerating change in everything, we absolutely need to accelerate our learning as well. Using AI to assist our learning is absolutely essential. Everyone - teachers, students, parents, employers, and more - must find the best ways to do that.

These before and after results from our training on AI in education are exciting. We surveyed teacher trainers about their emotions in regards to AI at the International Language Teacher Education Conference at the University of Minnesota. Our results show that with specialized training we can help encourage and empower teachers to use AI confidently and intentionally in the classroom. So many possibilities to use AI intentionally in education. Do you have plans to intentionally build AI into your academic programs? As we met with educators of teachers we learned many teachers/ professors have various emotions about AI integration into K-12, college, or university programs. As we discussed AI, those emotions of concern or being skeptical or disappointed or torn or lost or nervous were replaced with new emotions which included an readiness to explore AI for intentional use in education.
