Masayoshi Son, chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group, stated that selling Nvidia too early led to a $150 billion loss. The Wall Street Journal reported that Son explained this during the annual general meeting on the 21st. In 2019, Son sold the Vision Fund's entire 4.9% stake in Nvidia for a $3.3 billion gain. He mentioned the sale was to improve fund performance and raise cash. Nvidia has since become a top company, with a market value of $3.22 trillion as of the 20th, close to Microsoft's $3.31 trillion. If you invest like a gambler, you should be prepared to lose money. The lucky people who will stumble upon the next Monster Beverage (which has far superior returns to even Amazon!) are few and far between. Attempting to replicate a strategy that relies primarily on hope and luck is a fool’s errand. Hope and luck are both good things, but neither one of them is a prudent investment strategy. The good news is that you do not need to win the investment lottery to be successful!"

I am not really sure what people could mean that "hardware" companies require more capital and time and hence don't make sense for VCs. 10 out of the 30 largest market cap companies in the world started with hardware products (like Apple, Tesla, Nvidia) and they hit IPOs in similar timeline than of a software company (8-15 years). It may feel like software MVP is easier to build, but they are both equally tough to make money with. Time to make MVP != time to make returns, but feels like people are basing their investments based on this intuition. For VCs to monetise, the companies need to deliver to customers - and people maybe underestimating the time it'll take for a software product to do that and overestimating the same for hardware. There may not be such a big of a difference.
