I’m tired of hearing this: “I deserve a pay rise” When all they’re doing is their job role requirements. Want a raise? It’s about more than just showing up and meeting the basics. A raise isn’t a reward for the minimum, it’s a recognition of: → the extra value you bring → of going beyond expectations and showing you’re ready for the next level Here’s what really counts: → Consistently delivering results and seeking better solutions → Actively contributing to growth and supporting team goals → Taking ownership, showing initiative and stepping up → Bringing fresh ideas that drive the business forward → Investing in your own development and skills Ask yourself: Are you simply meeting expectations? OR, Are you raising the bar and adding real impact? A pay rise should reflect growth, innovation and the difference you make - not just tasks completed. P.S. Laura Morgan I appreciate your powerful insights, Laura. They sparked an important realization: Sometimes, the biggest challenge isn't about metrics or effort - it's about the space we're in. Even the most driven individuals, bringing all that extra value you describe, can't flourish in an environment that constrains growth. Like trying to grow a mighty oak in a small pot - the potential is there, but the space limits what's possible. This is where company culture becomes fundamental. Without the right foundation, even extraordinary performance can lead to burnout rather than breakthrough. Your points about going beyond basics and creating real impact are spot on. I'd just add: the soil needs to be as rich as the seeds we plant. Thank you for opening this vital conversation about growth and recognition. 💫
Absolutely agree! A pay rise should reflect the extra value and positive impact you’re bringing to the organisation. Meeting the basic requirements is important, but real growth and recognition come from consistently going above and beyond. It's about contributing to the team's success, showing initiative, and investing in personal development to add fresh value. Raises are about the impact you make, not just the time you spend. If you're raising the bar, bringing new ideas, and driving the team forward, that's where true recognition and reward are earned.
When employees are tired of their situations and they want to get rid of it, asking for raise is one of the best ways. If you don't want to pay more, you can consider promotion or job rotation.
It's all about driving value and ownership of issues and opportunities. And by those I mean identifying and driving solutions to them. Don't show up at your boss's doorstep with a list of problems and opportunities. That's low value and not driving results. I would caution employees not to make themselves indispensable in their current role, though. That may pigeon hole them and limit their upward mobility.
A pay raise should reflect the value you bring, not just meeting expectations. It’s about going above and beyond—taking initiative, contributing to growth, and making a real impact. Don’t just do the job; own it and let your efforts shine.
