Questioning GenAI-driven personalization in higher education There is no doubt that GenAI has revolutionized and will revolutionize the education sector. One of the main selling points is the ability to provide a "highly personalized" and "customized" learning experience. This approach is based on a rather antiquated understanding of teaching and learning, which is all about how to get knowledge and skills into students' heads as efficiently as possible; it does not take into account the deeper purpose of higher education as a socio-epistemic process that is not always frictionless and involves serendipity, co-construction, exposure to diverse and sometimes uncomfortable ideas, participatory sense-making, cultivating wisdom, innovation, and jointly shaping our future that is highly unpredictable and ambiguous, socially and materially engaging with an unfolding world... In the past, education was straightforward: follow the curriculum, memorize facts, and get a degree, which was seen as the key to success. Knowledge was scarce, and schools were the primary source of learning. Teachers held the authority, and having a degree opened doors. From the ‘70s to ‘90s, the model began to shift. People questioned traditional paths, exploring vocational training and alternative careers. Universities became places for critical thinking and exploration, but the idea of a degree being necessary for success still held strong. Now, Gen Z is reshaping education entirely. With knowledge at their fingertips through online courses, YouTube tutorials, and self-teaching the importance of a formal degree is fading. Real-world, practical skills are valued more than certificates. Learning is faster, more relevant, and self-directed. The Alpha generation will likely push this further, favoring flexible, personalized learning experiences powered by AI and technology. Their education will be less structured and more adaptive to individual strengths and interests. As each generation moves away from rigid educational systems, it’s clear that the future of learning is focused on adaptability, problem-solving, and real-world application, not just traditional degrees. The least we can do is embrace this shift and recognize that learning is evolving beyond the classroom. #learning #evolve
