Virginia Tech’s Post

To mark the first day Women’s History Month, we’re looking back 100 years to when the first women students received full-time degrees. A century ago, the all-male institution commonly called VPI enrolled the first full-time student who was a woman. In 1925, the first five full-time women students at what is now Virginia Tech received their degrees and helped launch The Tin Horn and shape other experiences for those following in their footsteps. This set the stage for future generations of women who would not only receive a Virginia Tech education, but shape our university and world with their skills, talents, and sheer might. The History of Women at Virginia Tech is a digital effort led by University Libraries to share the history of the roles that women, including students, staff, faculty, and administrators, have played on at Virginia Tech. 🔗: vtwomenshistory.lib.vt.edu

When I was there for undergrad, one of our professors said women couldn't be Engineers 🙄. Yeah watch us! Hopefully those dinosaurs are long gone. #womeninstem

When I enrolled at VPI in 1965 there were 6,500 men and 150 women. Now VT has over 20,000 students with the majority women students.

Appreciate the pioneers who paved the way. Was always a minority as a woman engineer but fortunate to never experience discrimination.
