In 2020, I created a nonprofit organization called Talias Team- the mission was simple, create a program designed to support young ladies transitioning from high school into college. After spending years in Corporate America, the gap was apparent. The journey from high school to college is a critical turning point in a young woman’s life—a time when dreams take shape, but also when uncertainty can dim their potential. This is where the right support can make all the difference. Mentorship, encouragement, and opportunities are essential to help these young women believe in themselves and their ability to lead in any arena they choose. Yet, there’s a gap—a glaring void in the transition to leadership roles that persists well beyond college. In corporate America, women make up 47% of the workforce but hold less than 25% of executive and senior-level roles. When it comes to the very top, only about 10% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women. The numbers are even more disheartening for women of color. This disparity doesn’t start in the boardroom; it starts in the formative years, during the transition from high school to higher education, when confidence, guidance, and opportunity are most crucial. Without strong role models and mentors, many young women miss the chance to envision themselves as leaders. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can close the gap by investing in the next generation of female leaders. By stepping up as mentors, advocates, and champions, we can provide young women with the tools, networks, and confidence they need to thrive. What role does mentorship play in women's ascent up the corporate hierarchy, and how can it be maximized for success? Mentorship plays a crucial role in women's professional development and success. However, many women often face challenges finding mentors who truly understand and support their unique journeys. What have you learnt this week? If every day is a school day 😁what bit of advice have you taken this week? I’ve had a lot of great guidance this week from the likes of Darren Neill L.ISP, Charlie McIntyre and Daniel Priestley . I loved Daniel’s advice on refining your elevator pitch to be a Key Person of Influence. And took a gem from Charlie when he said “Don’t ask what someone THINKS about your offer at the end of the pitch. “ If you’ve got them emotionally invested in the value you can offer, this question nudges them into the logical zone and you lose that connection. Think instead about “when would you like to start?” Or something similar. And Darren’s reframing of innovation as actually over delivering is a great way to communicate that often used company value in a relateable way (along with a notebook of other ideas!). The big finish was with Susie Sprigg and her Women In Business Network (WIBN) leadership group where I learnt more about myself with a DISC profiling. This confirmed that the job I am doing now is exactly where I’m meant to be 🥳. So what have you learnt this week?? #lifelonglearning

Somewhere along the way, society decided that when women hit 50, they’re supposed to fade quietly into the background. But here’s the truth: we’re not dead yet—and we’re far from done. Let me tell you a story. For nearly 30 years, I dreaded my fifties. Not just because of the stereotypical ageism that portrays women as irrelevant or past their prime, but for a deeply personal reason: my dad passed away at 52. For me, 52 always felt like a finish line—a point beyond which life couldn’t exist. But now, standing here in this chapter of my life, I realise how wrong I was. Turning 52 has been revolutionary. It’s a reminder of how much I still have to give, learn, say, and do. And thankfully I’m not alone. There are so many incredible women emerging from what Dr Lucy Ryan aptly describes as ‘Collision’—the midlife smash-up in her amazing book ‘Revolting Women’. Some of these women I’m fortunate enough to call friends; others are strangers whose stories echo a common theme: a fierce determination not to fade into the background. Instead, they are stepping forward with renewed energy, speaking out with confidence, and thriving in ways that prove life doesn’t peak in your 40s—it evolves and expands. Visionary leaders and boards are starting to recognise the immense value women over 50 bring: our deep experience, emotional intelligence, leadership, mentorship, and resilience. These qualities aren’t liabilities—they’re superpowers. We’re not dead yet. In fact, we’re just getting started. Thankyou to Megan Dalla-Camina and Women Rising for the 8-week 'Male Allies' program. This program aims to educate on how best to advocate and support women in the workplace - and was genuinely one of the most impactful pieces of education I've undertaken. 6 key modules were covered; - Keys To Allyship - Challenges For Women At Work - Understanding The Landscape - Understanding And Managing Bias - Mentoring & Sponsorship - Leadership Shadow Did you know that 70% of women say they've experienced discrimination or bias in the last 3 years at work, compared to only 20% of men? Or that 66% of women receive negative feedback on their personal style during performance reviews at some point in their careers (ie. 'you can sometimes be abrasive') compared to only 1% of men? We have a long way to go, and I couldn't recommend the course enough. My team member Nadia Hakim is currently working through their core Women Rising program, which is their main offering and has been recommended for all women especially those in male dominated fields like technology and IT. Thankyou to the other Male Allies for sharing their experiences during our coaching calls in the program, and of course NEXTDC for continuing to support my development and leadership in this space.
