𝗖𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗗𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗮 The cabinet is advancing a €53.8 million contribution to the National Growth Fund project PhotonDelta, which will further put the Netherlands on the map as a leading player in the global chip industry. Photonic chips will make it possible to build smaller, faster and energy-efficient devices using light instead of electrons. Following a positive opinion from the National Growth Fund advisory committee, this contribution from the second phase of PhotonDelta's funding is now being granted earlier and finally. This investment is needed for Dutch participation in the European consortium PIXEurope, with which contract talks have started to create a pilot production line for integrated photonics. Components of this pilot plant are envisaged in both Eindhoven and Enschede. If international negotiations for this participation succeed, the government itself, with the approval of the European Union, intends to publicly invest €66.3 million in it. In total, there is an intended investment in PIXEurope from 11 countries and the European Commission of €380 million. ANOTHER EUROPEAN PHOTONIC SUCCESS STORY. Here's a link to the important story of the HyperPIC Project from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The initiative is led by Polish VIGO Photonics, which specialises in infrared detectors, complete infrared detection modules, and epitaxial wafers—products designed to capture and process infrared signals. The company is now seeking to integrate these components into a fingertip-sized PIC. Their compact size enables complex tests to be conducted quickly and conveniently, eliminating the need for a complete laboratory. "This could have applications in a wide range of fields,” says Costa, the director of corporate finance at the company, “from environmental monitoring and protection, like tracking greenhouse gases and industrial contaminations, to monitoring air and water quality in public buildings and private homes, and even advancing digital health monitoring through breath analysis, glucose monitoring, and detecting intoxicants in blood and sweat.” HyperPIC is also an excellent example of European collaboration, stimulating scientific breakthroughs and strengthening ties with key players in the photonics industry and research community. The project is carried out in partnership with leading companies such as ams OSRAM and TRUMPF Photonic Components, supported by famous academic institutions, including Eindhoven University of Technology, Tyndall National Institute, Politecnico di Milano, Warsaw University of Technology, Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), and the Łukasiewicz - Institute of Microelectronics and Photonics.
