An excellent article highlighting a growing need to assess valuation skills when selecting investment trust board members. In a high-interest rate environment, and amid increasing appetite for alternative asset classes, the structures in place for investment trust NEDs to review and challenge valuations of private company investments are coming under fresh scrutiny. This should be a key consideration for investment trust boards when conducting skills assessments and nominating Directors in the coming year, as regulatory pressure to improve governance and discipline around private market valuations mounts. As with investment trust boards, we expect this to be of increasing relevance to family offices, as demand for private investments by the UHNW market continues. We agree with the views of those represented within the article that NEDs with the experience and skills required to play a significant role in the oversight of valuations put forward by the asset manager or investment advisor will be of increasing importance. In the past couple of years they have been flat out, but they are now sharing some of that knowledge again more widely. Here’s an example from Steven Hickey. Yes, ‘Private Credit Secondaries’ is niche, but Private Markets is a world of niches and you really need to master the details if you want to avoid the pitfalls. More such pieces to follow…
