Recently, I had a unique opportunity to ensure our family name was printed correctly on the booster club t-shirt of my son's high school volleyball team. Our Turkish last name, Tansug, ends with a 'soft g'—pronounced 'Tansuu' but often overlooked in translations. For the first time in 30 years living in the U.S., I requested the correct spelling with a 'soft g' on our T-shirts (never too late to get the data right :) ), and to my delight, the manufacturer obliged! This experience was a small but powerful reminder of the importance of data ownership—similar to principles in data governance. Just as I took ownership (albeit after 30 years) to ensure our last name was represented accurately, in the business world, data owners must take active roles in how data is managed and utilized. Ensuring data is accurate, consistent, and used properly not only supports transparency but also enhances trust and reliability in data systems.
