When recruiting students to online courses and degrees, many factors matter; it’s not simply a case of focusing on one aspect and neglecting others. But, one area where the UK HE sector can improve, not just for online degrees but across all types of courses, is course webpages. So many pages I encounter create far too much friction for prospective applicants and commit one of the biggest web design sins: not answering people's questions. One of the most frustrating experiences is landing on a page where you can’t easily find important information that is critical to deciding whether or not to commit. One of the worst examples I’ve seen is for degree or course pricing. There are still instances where you have to embark on a voyage of clicks just to reach a table somewhere far off or download a PDF. In some cases, the fees list is so vague that you can only hope your interpretation of the categories matches the degree you’re actually interested in. There are also many examples of ambiguous information, outdated content, and content that contradicts the basics of what years of research tell us about online reading behaviour and how information should be written and laid out. Then there are those pages that have tipped the balance too far towards aesthetics over usability, neglecting the essential information people are looking for. All these issues can be damaging at a time when enrolments are becoming increasingly important, and this quote from Steve Krug encapsulates the potential knock-on effect: “The fact that the people who built the site didn’t care enough to make things obvious — and easy — can erode our confidence in the site and the organisation behind it.” Course webpages are just one part of the whole choreography of running a successful online degree and course offering at your university, but it’s an area where improvements are possible. Although, I acknowledge that sometimes it’s not that these issues are unknown, but rather that internal machinery hinders progress. Ultimately, sub-optimal course pages do not positively support recruitment efforts. However, for some, there’s good news because it may be an area of low-hanging fruit that, while not massively turning the dial, takes you one step closer to improving and optimising your approach as part of a broader, holistic strategy to continually enhance every element of your online education operation. #onlinelearning #onlineeducation #highereducation

5 High Income Skills Making Students $300-500/Hour in 2025 🚀 Ever wondered how some students are earning more than experienced professionals while still in university? Let me share something fascinating... I recently discovered a 23-year-old student who charges $800 for just four 90-minute consulting sessions, teaching businesses how to use basic software tools. Another student scaled to $35,000/month with a simple AI tool he coded from his dorm room. Here's the truth: Your university degree isn't the only path to high earnings. The real game-changer? High income skills that businesses desperately need. I've spent months researching and interviewing successful student entrepreneurs who have mastered these skills. Key insights I uncovered: • Why businesses pay students $10k+ for web design projects • How software consultancy can be your fastest route to $300/hour • The simple copywriting technique that turned a 0.5% conversion rate into 2% (worth millions) • Which design skills companies are willing to pay $400k/year for • The coding approach that's helping students launch 6-figure side projects The best part? None of these skills require special talents or expensive degrees. Just strategic learning and smart positioning. I've detailed everything in my comprehensive guide, including step-by-step pathways to mastering each skill while studying. Want the full breakdown? Click below for the complete article 👇 👉 https://lnkd.in/dXJs8MNV #HighIncomeSkills #StudentEntrepreneur #CareerDevelopment #SkillBuilding #DigitalSkills P.S. Utopia as Method: A Speculative Approach to Thinking and Taking Action - FREE online sessions alert! In November, I will be offering a series of online sessions for the Free University of Brighton (FUB). FUB is a cooperative, community-led organisation that provides and promotes free educational events. The aim is to grow an alternative education system that benefits us all, whoever we are, whatever our financial means. Everyone is welcome to attend the online sessions, free of charge. To sign up for this course, join the online learning platform on Ryver and search for 'Utopia As Method' in the forums menu: https://lnkd.in/eKecFCY3 1/ Utopia as Method: A speculative approach to thinking and taking action Everyone knows the idea of utopia as an idealised, paradisical place, and in this conception it is often dismissed as desirable but naive and unattainable. Utopia as Method puts the concept of utopia to work as a way to imagine possible alternative futures that involve both thinking and taking action. During four online sessions, we explore Utopia as Method theoretically and conceptually before applying it as a strategy in a practical and hands on way, focusing on an issue or topic of choice. Key literature and recommended texts will be provided for each session. Prerequisites: none Target audience: anyone The four sessions will run online on the following times and dates: Introduction and a focus on archaeology - Thursday 7 November 17.30 - 19.00 BST A focus on ontology - Tuesday 12 November 17.30 - 19.00 BST A focus on architecture - Thursday 14 November 17.30 - 19.00 BST Applying Utopia as Method - Tuesday 19 November 17.30 - 19.00 BST 2/ Reimagining Education for Sustainable Development: Applying Utopia As Method In this provocation, we apply a speculative approach to thinking and taking action called Utopia as Method to re-imagine Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). We start with considering how ESD emerged within the context of global institutions such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in the years and decades following the Second World War, and how it is positioned now. Then, we investigate the values and conceptions of what it means to be human that are embedded in ESD and which voices are absent. We finally turn our attention to how we can imagine the idea of ‘sustainability’ differently, what alternatives to ESD might look like, and how those ideas can inform our work and lives in the present moment. Key literature and recommended texts will be provided. Prerequisites: none Target audience: anyone with a personal or professional interest in (education for) sustainable development This is a standalone online workshop on Tuesday 5 November 17.00 - 19.00 BST. #utopiaasmethod #freeuniversityofbrighton #alternativeeducation #educationforall #speculativethinking
