USDA has invested $3.03 billion dollars in 135 pilot projects nationwide to connect customers to farmers, ranchers, and private landowners implementing “climate smart” production practices on working lands “to build soil health, sequester carbon, and enhance productivity.” The agency recently reported on the number and diversity of projects incentivized by the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities. While the concept of regenerative agriculture isn’t necessarily new, its popularity is. And as larger companies become more interested in the concept, they are demanding studies and results before making a switch. The USDA acknowledged this need by launching the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities Projects in Spring 2023. The federally funded program is a centerpiece of the US strategy to help farmers and ranchers address climate change. We are excited to announce that our participation in one of these projects kicked off last week! We are participating in the International Fresh Produce Association’s project called A Vibrant Future, which focuses on (among other crops) grapes. Measure To Improve, LLC will work directly with us to strategize, measure, and monitor the results of Tablas Creek’s specific participation. Over the duration of the 5-year study, we will look at the impact of diversifying our cover crops, increasing seed rates, no-till seeding and termination, grazing, and potentially more as the project develops in our Kneppel Flat block. We will share the results as they become available. The world of private carbon trading is upon us and is only set to grow in the coming years. Take Alberta’s carbon credit program for example – the monetary value of carbon credits through this program are set to increase year over year until 2030. The carbon economy provides a strong opportunity for beef producers to boost their bottom lines with this additional income stream. Simply put, producers are leaving money on the table if they aren’t already participating. Learn more about tapping into this income source, at the link below. https://lnkd.in/g-VTyHmb

It's always so encouraging to see investment making real impact. Congratulations to USDA and Secretary Vilsack on their historic achievement. We at AFF have learned firsthand how essential public-private partnerships are to creating new market opportunities for rural landowners. Partnership models like Climate Smart Commodities are a win-win for rural America - bringing much needed private capital to family landowners and local economies, all while improving the health and productivity of our forests and the planet. And this specific partnership is bringing resources to small rural landowners that have never been engaged before, ensuring they aren’t left out of the voluntary carbon market. For example - through the Family Forest Carbon Program, roughly 60% of the landowners we enroll have never had a plan for the future of their forest or help from a professional forester. That all changes with Climate Smart Commodities. We're proud to be a partner of USDA to kickstart investment into rural America. https://lnkd.in/eNr5PDEY

An Agri-Pulse analysis of projects that account for the bulk of spending under the Biden administration’s Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities initiative shows it heavily relies on a relatively small number of practices. And most of the projects are paying farmers according to the practices they implement rather than for actual emission reductions. https://lnkd.in/gEVFC3ff

Collaboration between governments, civil society, the finance sector and supply chain companies to get the right policies and drive sustainable investment for palm oil is key to progress on deforestation. The NDPE-IRF tool is a great example of industry collaboration and transparency - more companies should be using this tool to increase transparency and promote progress across the palm oil sector, and beyond. According to leadership logic, palm oil plantations are just as eco-friendly as rainforests—because, apparently, leaves are all that matter. https://lnkd.in/ewggiVHE #LeadershipLogic #deforestatio #DeforestationDoublespeak #PalmOil

When South Australian grain grower Barry Mudge looks back on the ‘clangers’ he has made around his enterprise, he can see a flawed decision-making process at play. A result of ‘cognitive biases’, these missteps were influenced by personal preferences, loss aversion or simply stress and fatigue. The GRDC RiskWi$e project is about avoiding these pitfalls by equipping growers with robust decision-making frameworks. These are intended to help the industry sustain enduring profitability in the face of considerable risks, particularly around weather and price volatility. At the 2024 GRDC Adelaide Grains Research Update, Mr Mudge, with collaborator and South Australian Research and Development Institute principal scientist in climate applications Dr Peter Hayman, explained how their Fast Graphs for Slow Thinking tool could be used to inform nitrogen application decisions for both peace of mind and better economic outcomes. 👉 Read more https://bit.ly/4ai7lSN #RiskWise | CSIRO | Department of Primary Industries and Regions

This week’s Open Mic podcast is Kailee Tkacz Buller, President and CEO of the National Oilseed Processors Association. The nation’s oilseed processing industry has rapidly been expanding capacity to meet growing demand for their products. Many new plants have been built, others are under construction and additional processing capacity could be added pending public policy decisions. Buller says renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel hold tremendous opportunities for further oilseed industry expansion. Buller hopes 40Z tax credit rules will include more acceptable climate smart production practices and less bundling. NOPA opposes policies that place caps on vegetable oil capacity and encourage imports of used cooking oil from foreign countries. https://lnkd.in/gr_Jq5T3 @NOPA #oilseed #soybeans #renewable diesel
