The Nightmare Before Christmas: You're halfway through your student exchange, but you have no money to cover your living costs, let alone buy gifts for your family. One of the main challenges students on mobility face is insufficient funding. 💰 Almost 36% of students told us that their grant was not covering their living costs, making it the top issue for them. 🔎 At City Park West in Chelmsford, our Optimisation team played an important role in addressing long-standing performance challenges for Notting Hill Genesis’ (NHG) heat network, which serves 642 homes, including vulnerable residents. With support from Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) funding, we conducted an optimisation study that identified immediate stabilisation actions while setting the stage for long-term improvements. By implementing the proposed measures, the network is projected to achieve reduced heat losses, enhanced heat supply reliability for residents, and significant reductions in utility, gas, and electricity consumption. 🌟 HNES funding has proven to be a game-changer, empowering housing associations like NHG to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions that directly improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance customer satisfaction. 💬 Peter Horne, Senior Engineer at FairHeat, shares: "The optimisation study was initially requested as the site was struggling with pressurisation issues. Using HNES funding, we broadened the scope to identify other improvement opportunities. Through collaboration with the housing team and scheme's maintenance contractor, we implemented quick stabilisation actions and tailored work packages to complement one another. This phased approach allows NHG to address priorities affordably while maximising long-term impact. We’re excited to see the carbon reduction these works will achieve." 💡 Optimising heat networks isn’t just about solving technical problems—it’s about creating sustainable, efficient systems that deliver real benefits to residents and the environment. ➡️ Facing similar issues? Take a look at our new set of HNES case studies! To determine how to get Chelmsford City Park’s heat network running to its full potential, Notting Hill Genesis applied for a HNES revenue grant. Partnering with FairHeat to conduct an optimisation study, this highlighted the next steps needed to remedy its performance and improve outcomes for customers. Have a look 👀 We’ve worked with Key Fund for years .. they’re there for organisations making a difference in disadvantaged communities. Their Northern Impact Fund 2, open until 2027, offers a blend of loan and grant financing, with up to 30% of the total funding provided as a grant. I’m really pleased to see this development because a targeted fund for the North and Midlands is crucial because these regions often face unique economic challenges and disparities in access to funding compared to other parts of the UK. If you're an organisation in the North or Midlands, the Northern Impact Fund 2 could be really helpful to support your growth. Keyfund are great because they not only provide the financial support, practical guidance and advice, ensuring you’re not just receiving money, but also the partnership and support to succeed from lovely people who “get” the sector and its challenges. Whether you’re looking to expand your impact or take the next step for your purpose driven enterprise, it’s worth speaking speak to Key Fund about the Northern Impact Fund - what have you got to lose? Dave Thornett
The Northern Impact Fund 2 supports organisations, to grow and amplify their impact. And in turn, those organisations throw lifelines - often to those most in need, and often in our most disadvantaged communities. We’ve now secured the final pieces of finance for the £8.45m Northern Impact Fund 2, which is open until 2027 to organisations working in the north and midlands. 🙌 Read more about NIF2 here 👉👉👉 https://ow.ly/70gR50Thlg0 #funding #partnerships #communities #opportunities #socent #socialenterprise #blog #socialgood #keyfund
