Did you know? Microsoft, Meta, Google and Amazon spent a combined $125 billion on investing in and running AI data centers between January and August 2024, according to a J.P. Morgan study. In the United States, there are over 2,500 data centers. The largest data center in the United States is owned by Meta (Facebook), spanning a total of 4.6 million square feet, which is located in Prineville, Oregon. Digital Realty owns the most data centers in the United States with 124 facilities, comprising 1,323 megawatts of white space IT load across 22.9 million net rentable square feet. Equinix operates the second most data centers in the United States with 76 facilities. Data centers are one of the most energy-intensive building types, consuming 10 to 50 times the energy per floor space of a typical commercial office building. Collectively, these spaces account for approximately 1-2% of the total U.S. electricity use, and as the use of information technology grows, data center and server energy use is expected to grow too.
