#BharatSancharNigamLimited (#BSNL), India’s government-operated telecom provider, has launched its new #DirectToDevice #SatelliteConnectivity service. Announced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), this is India’s first satellite-to-device communication service, developed in partnership with US-based communications technology company #Viasat. Aimed at providing connectivity in remote areas, the new service is designed to help users stay connected even in isolated locations. The initiative is perceived with a significant paradigm shift in the communication landscape in India. The initiative, initially showcased at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024, marks a significant step towards bridging India’s digital divide. BSNL’s satellite service will allow users to make emergency calls, send SoS messages, and even process UPI payments in situations where cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. However, the telecom provider has not yet clarified whether the service will support regular calls or SMS for everyday use outside emergencies. It remains to be seen if the feature will be included in existing plans or offered as a separate package. The service will likely benefit users across rural and remote regions, though further details on pricing and activation are expected soon. Direct-to-device connectivity allows mainstream gadgets, such as smartphones, smartwatches, or even vehicles, to connect seamlessly to terrestrial and satellite coverage. This enables devices to stay connected from any location without the need for dedicated hardware to connect to satellites. This new satellite-based service places India among the few countries offering direct satellite connectivity to consumers, underscoring BSNL’s role in expanding network access for all Indian users. This is a milestone and an initiative towards bridging the connectivity gaps in remote areas of India and further provide uninterrupted network access in areas with limited or no cellular coverage. It is directly addressing and remedying the issue of digital divide in India. For now, BSNL’s launch marks a major advancement in making reliable communication accessible across the farthest reaches of India, setting the stage for a more connected and tech-driven future.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀? New Zealand’s challenging terrain, with vast rural areas lacking traditional mobile coverage, makes connectivity a persistent issue. One NZ claims D2D now covers: 40% of landmass outside the reach of mobile towers. Up to 20 km offshore. This means better connectivity for remote communities, farmers, adventurers, and anyone beyond urban areas. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁? 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆? Yes, it’s slow—𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘄. Think of this as an early-stage MVP (Minimum Viable Product). As the technology evolves, satellite deployments increase, and commercialization ramps up, speeds are expected to improve significantly in the coming year. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆? Currently, compatible with four smartphone models: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Oppo Find X8 Pro Expect this list to grow. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁? Trials for new #satellite #connectivity started in October 2024 and soon, it will be available for customers across the country. The government-owned telecom operator has launched India’s first direct-to-device satellite connectivity service in the country in collaboration with #Viasat, a California-based communications technology company. Both companies have promised to provide uninterrupted connectivity for users in even the remotest corners of the country. But still, many of our readers are unclear about the new service and how it will benefit the users. So here is everything you need to know about the satellite-to-device service. 🔴What is #BSNL’s Satellite-to-Device service? 👉The new satellite connectivity service aims to eliminate communication blackouts in remote and isolated areas of the country. Users who are trekking through the Spiti Valley or living in remote villages of Rajasthan could stay connected with the new satellite service. #BSNL further stated that it will let emergency calls, SOS messaging and even UPI payments in areas where the cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is less. However, it remains unclear whether the service will support regular voice calls and SMS beyond emergency scenarios. 🔴How will the new service work? 👉The service uses non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity to offer two-way communication through geostationary satellites located 36,000 km away. At the IMC 2024 demonstration, the companies will showcase successful message transmission and reception via L-band satellites. The service does not require users to rely on conventional cellular networks, making it an excellent option for emergencies or locations where traditional infrastructure is unavailable. Testing and launch timeline in India Trials for the direct-to-device satellite connectivity have already started in October 2024. The service will soon (in a month) be launched by BSNL, which will showcase India’s advancements in satellite communication technology. 🔴Who will get the access and what will be the pricing? 👉Although the new satellite-to-device service claims to deliver groundbreaking connectivity to remote area users, further details are yet to be revealed by the company. BSNL has yet to specify if the satellite connectivity will be bundled into existing plans or require separate subscriptions.
